As a key element of that City Deal, Southend Council were able to secure £1.8m of Regional Growth Fund monies to deliver a business support hub as well as initiatives including grants, innovation expertise and support for new and growing businesses. The business hub, although based in Southend, aims to provide business support activities across Thames Gateway South Essex (TGSE), including Castle Point. Castle Point Borough Council has been successful in its recent bid to acquire funding through the newly established hub – ‘Business Southend’ - to extend the business support programme offer to its local business community. Businesses will be able to access tailored business support to identify and address growth opportunities and receive advice on increasing trade and improving market access. To supplement, there are a range of free business workshops, mentoring and 1-2-1 support delivered by Essex Chamber of Commerce. Innovation Vouchers (delivered by Anglia Ruskin and Essex Universities) are also available through the programme, worth up to £5,000. In addition to the programme of business support, grant funding is also available. The South Essex Grant, more local in its offer and not bound by a requirement to accord with a specific sector or particular project, should help to incentivise the local business base. Grant awards of 30%, which support job creation and job safeguarding, could enable local SME’s to implement an intervention now that they may have considered in the future or not at all – supporting the growth potential of the business or protecting the employment of the labour force which could otherwise be potentially impacted upon. The Business Forum is delighted that the programme of business support and grant funding generated through the Southend Growth Hub is now available in Castle Point. The window of opportunity for funding for projects is open until 28 February 2015. We would encourage local companies to seize this excellent opportunity to boost your business. For further information about the programme, and how your business can benefit, please contact the Regeneration Team. The Regeneration Partnership has appointed Building Design Partnership (BDP) – in association with GL Hearn - to prepare a development brief to market the site, securing appropriate development proposals that accord with the aspirations of all stakeholders. Expressions of interest for the redevelopment of the site will be sought during the autumn. Formal proposals from appropriate commercial developers are anticipated early into the New Year. Hadleigh Town Centre - Highways: The removal of the bus lane along London Road to facilitate an extension of the town centre public realm improvement scheme is the subject of ongoing discussion between Essex County Council and Castle Point. The Castle Point Regeneration Partnership is seeking confirmation that the bus lane, once removed, can revert to public realm. A draft scheme produced by Morrison’s architects - to achieve a new entry/exit onto the A13 for their store - is also under consideration by the Partnership, pending ongoing highways discussions. Canvey Town Centre: Aquila Developments are continuing to work with the Regeneration Partnership on a variety of options for a transformational development of the central retail core as based on the adopted Canvey Town Centre masterplan. West Canvey: The 20 acre Northwick Road site has been purchased by the Inner London Group who are proposing to implement the existing planning permission for a high quality Business Park. A meeting is being arranged to ascertain the nature of any proposed development. Tarpots: National supermarket chain ALDI opened for business on October 16, creating 40 local jobs. Improvements to the public realm, linking the development site to the Tarpots shopping area are being sought as part of the development. As part of the development, Aldi have been granted permission to re-instate the right-hand turn into Rushbottom Lane from the westbound A13. From 1 April 2014, those businesses that take on an additional property, which would normally have meant the loss of small business rate relief, will now be allowed to keep that relief for a period of 12 months. In addition to Small Business Rate Relief, there is further financial help in the form of a £1,000 discount for all occupied retail properties with a rateable value below £50,000, which are being wholly or mainly used as shops, restaurants, cafes and drinking establishments. Cllr Colin Riley, Leader of Castle Point Borough Council commented: “The Council is committed to supporting local businesses make the most of the economic recovery and to grow. It is important therefore that local businesses get all the financial support they need, but we believe that there are still businesses that have not made a claim. Although take up of these reliefs within the borough is high, I would urge anyone eligible to contact us to find out more.” Full details of business rate relief schemes are available on-line www.castlepoint.gov.uk/business-rates or call 01268 882237 and speak directly to the Business Rates Team. Local Businesses are being encouraged to claim Small Business Rate Relief, a national business rates relief scheme being operated by Castle Point Borough Council. Businesses who have just one property can claim 100% rates relief if their premises have a rateable value of less than £6,000 and can still claim a tapered reduction if they occupy a property with a rateable value between £6,000 and £12,000. It is also possible to claim back dated relief to April 2010. Over 800 businesses in Castle Point currently claim this form of relief. Basildon based LifeSkills provides apprenticeships to businesses across Essex. For the second year running, they have linked up with the Yellow Advertiser to set a challenge to the local business community – sign up to their 100 apprentices in 100 days campaign. The campaign encourages young people to consider apprenticeships as an alternative to higher education, as well as urging businesses to create apprentice positions. Last year’s campaign significantly exceeded its target, spurring 71 companies in the Basildon area to create 101 new positions, and recruiting 144 local youngsters into apprenticeships. With over 130,000 businesses across the UK offering apprenticeship places, recognising their effectiveness at increasing productivity, improving business performance and generating a committed and competent workforce, the ‘100 in 100’ campaign is targeted to businesses across Castle Point to get as many of this year’s school leavers into apprenticeships as possible.
