Fritz de 1707, en que se señala la localización de los diferentes grupos indígenas, siendo recién mencionado en las fuentes del siglo XVIII. Originalmente ocupaban parte del río Alto Nanay y sus tributarios, el río Blanco y el Chambira y, luego, se extendieron desde el río Tigre hasta el río Napo. Estaban divididos en tres sub-tribus: los iquitos propiamente dichos, los maracanos y los auves. En 1737 fue llevado a cabo el primer intento de pacificar a los iquitos, pero sólo en 1740 fue posible organizar dos reducciones con ellos. En total, los jesuitas fundaron ocho reducciones con los iquitos. Estas presentaron, sin embargo, el problema de que sus habitantes huían cuando el misionero se ausentaba constituyendo una población flotante. Muchos se retiraron al río Blanco. En 1925 se encontraban varios cientos de iquitos en el Medio y Bajo Nanay. ACTIVIDADES ECONÓMICAS: La agricultura de subsistencia y comercial, así como la pesca y, en menor medida, la caza constituyen el soporte básico de su actividad económica. La activa presencia de los patrones locales, determinó durante un largo tiempo la sujeción de la población iquito a los mismos.
