Este subgrupo incluye también al fenicio-púnico , al moabita y al amonita . El otro subgrupo de las lenguas semíticas noroccidentales es al que pertenece el arameo , cuyas similaridades con el hebreo aún son evidentes aunque algo más distantes que con el fenicio. Muy posiblemente algunas variedades de fenicio y algunas de hebreo fueran mutuamente inteligibles en un alto grado. La palabra hebreo (' ivrît ) no es usada en la lengua hasta el periodo helenístico, pero se puede leer acerca de "la lengua de Caná" en Isaías 19.18; y en 2 Reyes 18.26,28 (= Isa. 36.11,13; 2Crón. 32.18) y Nehemías 13.24; los jerosolimitanos hablan yehûdît , esto es, "judeo" (más tarde "judío").
