Sincerely, Connie Hathorn, Ph.D. Superintendent Volume 1, Issue 2 June 2014 YCSD Dear Members of the Youngstown City School District Community, This special edion of YCSD Focus e - Newsleer is dedicated to recognizing and honoring the Class of 2014 gradu- ates and the many students, sta, ad- ministrators who received an array of awards of achievement. Congratulaons to the Class of 2014! Student achievement is the primary focus within the Youngstown City Dis- trict. Our 2014 graduates accumulated a variety of naonal and state honors. This year’s commencement ceremonies awarded diplomas to 45 seniors from YEC, 206 seniors from East High School and 43 seniors from the Chaney STEM/ VPA Campus. Among the 294 graduates, ten received associate degrees from Youngstown State University, three were inducted into the Naonal Honors Society, thir- teen were inducted into the Naonal Technical Honor Society, and six re- ceived honors diplomas. The YCSD Class of 2014 also earned many nancial rewards, including two YEC seniors receiving full scholarships to The Ohio State University through the OSU Young Scholars Program and the three YEC seniors who each re- ceived more than $5,000 in scholar- ships. Congratulaons to all students who received awards of achievement at their respecve school building’s Olym- piad/Awards Assemblies held through- out this school year as well as students who parcipated in the Desnaon Imaginaon Teams placing in the state tournament and the global nals. A special thank you is extended to all principals, teachers, sta, and volun- teers whose dedicaon and hard work helped to make these assemblies, ath- lec, and other triumphs possible and memorable experiences for parci- pang students and their families. Congratulaons to the two teachers at McGuey Elementary School who were selected this year’s recipients of the “Teacher of the Year Award”, the teacher at Chon Career & Technical Center who selected the recipient of this year’s “Athena Award”, and the teacher at Chon who was designated a “Master Teacher”.
