2 Residents Representin ANC at the pen ouse RESIDENT LEADERSHIP GROUP IN MOTION They may be new, but the three subcommittees formed by the Resident Leadership Group (RLG), supported by Action for Neighbourhood Change (ANC), are already in motion. The Social Events Committee, the Entrepre- neurship Committee and the Mother’s Committee have already taken their first steps towards identifying and achieving their long-term goals. SOCIAL EVENTS COMMITTEE The Social Events Committee formed to plan events that en- courage the diverse residents in our neighbourhood to come to- gether to eventually forge strong, meaningful bonds. This committee was instrumental in the organization and execution of an annual Jane’s Walk and Clean-Up of Earl Bales Park on April 27, 2014, among many other events. It was the first time that local community leaders served as Jane’s Walk Choreographers. ENTREPRENEURSHIP COMMITTEE The Entrepreneurship Committee aims to provide resources and support to all entrepreneurs and potential entrepreneurs within the community, with a special focus on women. June 24, 2014 marked its official launch event which included guest speakers and representatives from various agencies who support this kind of work. The question and answer sessions and panel discussions helped the club identify the needs and interests of people hoping to become small business or social enterprise owners, or to become engaged in social enterprise. MOTHER’S COMMITTEE The goal of the Mother’s Commit- tee is to respond to the needs of mother’s in the Bathurst -Finch community with children under 12 years old. The Mother’s Commit- tee is actively looking for more members and researching the best ways to connect with other local mothers to identify and pri- oritize their needs. Do you want to join a subcommit- tee? Please contact us at 647- 836-0385 ext 524. Action for Neighbourhood Change (ANC) put to- gether a day of capacity- building training for resi- dents in the Bathurst- Finch community on April 6, 2014. This day con- sisted of training on com- munication and presenta- tion skills and a workshop on community organizing for change. Twenty-five residents from the Bathurst-Finch community attended, many of whom were from the ANC Resident Leadership Group or involved with other resident engagement groups in the neighbourhood. Nancy Oomen deliv- ered the presentation on Communication Skills Training. Nancy has been involved with the community in the Bathurst-Finch area for over a decade and has a wealth of experience working with community groups. Participants enjoyed networking, were engaged and found the training very informative. The President of Public Interest Toronto, Sean Meagher, delivered an “Organizing 101 Workshop.” Overall, participants were extremely posi- tive about learning the basic strategies and skills of public organizing for change. Participants were asked to identify a cause they were passion- ate about – one that would motivate them to take action. The causes varied from re-opening the North York General Hospital on Finch Ave- nue to spreading the word effectively to seniors about services available to them through the Bathurst-Finch Hub. ORGANIZING FOR CHANGE AT THE COMMUNICATION SKILLS AND CAPACITY BUILDING WORKSHOPS Presentation Skills Workshop Why I Believe in Action for Neighbourhood Change by Priyan De Silva Action for Neighbourhood Change (ANC) works with communities on a grassroots level to ensure individuals have access to resources and sup- port as they transition into a post industrial society. Issues such as social justice, environmentalism, civil liberties, and humanitarian needs are ad- dressed openly and equitably. The open forum concept of how ANC handles issues is very appealing and comfortable. The collaborative ef- forts enables members and the community to benefit in ways that would not otherwise be possible on an individual basis. The welcoming atmosphere and inclusiveness helped me become a more active member. Volunteering my time with the ANC has been indescribably rewarding. I have met new people from all walks of life, broken down many of my biases and have had new experiences that have given me purpose.
