Language-wise, upon successful completion of this course, a student is expected to have acquired the following: Mastering key political concept vocabulary in MSA Arabic. Strengthening reading-comprehension skills in MSA via political texts. Reinforcing active mastery of complex sentence construction in MSA. Rising oral conversation skills by participating in active discussions and interchange of ideas, opinions and major political notions related to Modern Arabic thought. Course Description : Many of the Arab political trends of thought, that the reading material for this class tackles, offers a language level that allows for a growth not only in language skills (reading, writing and speaking), but also a growth in understanding these main political trends against the backdrop of other intellectual traditions that they carry further or reject. Thus, the class will situate these approaches in a “critical” manner with the main purpose of language practice and expansion. Methodologically, the class will mostly adhere to categorical approach that emphasizes the dynamic nature of the works of some of the most influential thinkers, leaders and politicians who are known to represent Liberal nationalism, Arab nationalism, Islamism, and critiques of contemporary Arab society and the way they used language to portray their beliefs, and shape new social concepts in the Arab world.
