We are very keen to reach out to all London bookshops to participate in London Book & Screen Week, which takes place from 13th to 19th April, with London Book Fair at its heart. London Book & Screen Week is designed to unites readers, writers, gamers and film fans, with hundreds of events taking place across the capital that celebrate stories and the written word in all its forms. Booksellers will have the chance to list any bookshop events on the LBSW website, www.londonbookandscreenweek.co.uk London bookshops will also be promoted to London Book Fair visitors in a more systematic way next year. Not only will London bookshops be able to list their events on the website, we will also be creating a Bookshop Crawl map, which will feature central London bookshops and which will be promoted to visitors. We want to make sure that visitors to London are well aware of the tremendous range of bookshops in the capital, and as well as a map, we will also be running a Literary Walk for LBF visitors, created by the BA’s own Sydney Davies. Any bookshop who would like to appear on the LBF Bookshop Crawl map should contact Naomi Gane at the BA naomi.gane@booksellers.org.uk If you are interested in participating more creatively in London Book & Screen Week, you can get in touch with them about becoming a blogger on the site – contact sam.delia@reedexpo.co.uk Further details about Hosted Bookseller Programme, the BA bookseller activity and LBSW is available from naomi.gane@booksellers.org.uk or visit www.londonbookfair.co.uk 2 BOOKSELLING ESSENTIALS | FEATURES LONDON BOOK & SCREEN WEEK Facebook: www.facebook.com/ thebooksellersassociation Twitter: BAbooksellers Twitter: IndieBound_UK LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/company/ the-booksellers-association CONTENTS FEATURES...........................2 THE LONDON BOOK FAIR 2015 LONDON BOOK & SCREEN WEEK OXFORD SUMMER SCHOOLS GRANT MONEY INVESTMENT UNDERWAY CAMPAIGNS & EVENTS......3 COSTA BOOK AWARDS 2014 IBW DATES 2015 WORLD BOOK DAY 2015 ACADEMIC CONFERENCE 2015 BA CONFERENCE REPORT WELLCOME BOOK PRIZE 2015 CHRISTMAS BOOKS 2014 BOOKSHOPS BACK BOOKS ARE MY BAG SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY 6TH DECEMBER BA SIGNS UP TO READ ON, GET ON BA SERVICES......................9 CREDIT CARD FRAUD – WARNING CARRIER BAG CHARGE IN SCOTLAND – VAT IMPLICATIONS AUTO ENROLMENT PENSION COMPLIANCE INDUSTRY EYE BUSINESS SUPPORT HELPLINE INDIE EBOOK SERVICES CABOODLE NATIONAL BOOK TOKENS BATCH NEWS YOUR BA...........................16 MESSAGE FROM THE BA CEO BA SPECIALIST GROUP’S ROUND UP MEET THE COUNCIL LETTER FROM THE BA PRESIDENT BOOKSELLING FOCUS.....18 INDIEBOUND BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS DIARY DATES FOR BOOKSELLERS BOOKSHOP TOP 10 NEW MEMBER PROFILE Bookselling Essentials is the newsletter of the Booksellers Association of the United Kingdom & Ireland Ltd, 6 Bell Yard, London, WC2A 2JR T: 020 7421 4640; F: 020 7421 4641; E: mail@booksellers.org.uk Views expressed in Bookselling Essentials are not necessarily those of the Booksellers Association or its Council. Last year, Matthew Taylor from Chepstow Bookshop secured a scholarship place and wrote about his experience in the August edition of Bookselling Essentials. In partnership with retailTrust, Oxford Summer School are once again offering six fully funded and six 50% funded retail management training and development scholarships to the Masters 2015, taking place 23rd – 26th February at the Said Business School, Egrove Park, Oxford. The aim of the scholarship programme is to enable people in retail and associated trades to reach their potential and fulfil their aspirations at work and in their own lives. Applicants must be employed by, or be the owner/manager of a small or medium sized retailer, with fewer than 5000 employees per organisation. Applications must be received by 5pm on 8th December 2014.
