Indiana University Department of Theatre, Drama, and Contemporary Dance presents Jon Jory's adaptation of Jane Austen's beloved novel. The guide contains background, cast, and creative team information for this 2014 production. Jane Austen (1775-1817) was born in Steventon, Hampshire at the start of the American War of Independence. The Austen siblings put on amateur theatricals, including Sheridan’s The Rivals , at home, while at Oxford brothers James and Henry published the periodical The Loiterer . Jane Austen began writing at an early age, drafting Sense and Sensibility in 1795 and beginning First Impressions , re-titled Pride and Prejudice , in 1796. Published in 1813, Pride and Prejudice was praised for its realistic portrayal of human character and feeling. The Critical Review noted that “Many such silly women as Mrs. Bennet may be found; and numerous parsons like Mr. Collins, who are every thing to every body. . . . The sentiments, which are dispersed over the work, do great credit to the sense and sensibility of the authoress.” The author of six completed novels, two of which were published posthumously, Jane Austen died in 1817 at the age of forty-one.
