Not only does he run a successul a music coaching academy, he is also a speaker and coach to small businesses in a variety o industries. This broad view gives Derek a unique look under the hood o many diferent types o businesses. Too oten speakers and coaches develop a sense o tunnel vision by only working with clients within a single niche. These blinders can make a coach overlook a wealth o inormation. Derek takes a broad look at all types o small businesses and asks, “How can a music coach use this strategy to grow his or her business?” I there is gold, he will nd it or those he serves. Welcome to Music Coach Magazine ! My name is Derek Berg, and I am the publisher and ounder o MusicCoachingBusiness.com. MCM is a publication that is ocused upon showing established music instructors, rustrated teachers, perorming musicians, and absolute newbies how to share their musical “know how” in a whole new way. Occasionally, someone will ask me, “What is the diference between a music instructor and a music coach? Great question, by the way. One way to answer that question is to whip out the old dictionary and throw down the ormal denition: in·struc·tor - a person who teaches something. coach - to train intensively. Still, some will make the argument that it’s a semantics game... you say potato, I say potato. Since our publication is built upon this distinction, Music Coach Magazine has gone to great lengths to explicitly crat our own unique denition o what it means to be a modern music coach. Our custom interpretation determines the musicians we interview, the articles we publish, the programs we create and the content we provide. We believe music coaching is not simply a mere inormation exchange. We believe the modern music coaches o today are in the inspiration and results business! Talented musicians have the right to spend a majority o their or- ty-hour work week utilizing their gits and talents. For most o us, a non- musical day job is unacceptable. All aspiring musicians should eel a true sense o ulllment and adventure in developing their coaching business. The modern music coach has the reedom o choice when it involves the type o programs we create. We have options when it concerns our choice o musical topics. In this issue, you will read about individuals who have cre- ated coaching programs that ocus upon music marketing, music produc- tion, song writing, and artist development. You will also read about individuals who have built successul businesses showing others how to play musical in- struments using nontraditional and creative methods. Today’s coaches also have the choice to break out o the 1-on-1 business model by using technology to reach their audience and share their musical message in a bigger way. This in- volves everything rom multi-coach studios to virtual training membership web- sites. Those same innovations in technology are also allowing our industry to market, promote and run our businesses in a more efective and ecient way. It is air to say that due to these radical shits in our culture, mind-set, in- dustry and technology, the old-school music instruction model has gone through a complete overhaul. It is not business as usual. Now musicians rom all walks o lie can share their musical message and “know-how” in a whole new way without the requirement o a degree in music. Don’t get me wrong, I believe an outstand- ing coach must be totally committed to skill building and a never- ending pursuit o knowledge. All I am saying is this: talent, skills, passion, and personality can rival a ormal degree when becoming a musical entrepreneur. Motivated, creative, and hard working artists should be able to earn an income using their musical talents.
