CONTEXT On the 19 th of September 1819, after a walk near Winchester in England, John Keats wrote the poem To Autumn. This walk was to help him clear his head and also take the time to compose his final piece of work. Financial circumstances, namely a lack of income, meant that Keats was no longer able to continue his career as a poet. So his work ‘To Autumn’ would mark the end of his short, yet successful career. The poem was simple. Keats wrote what he could see and what he was feeling at the time of his walk. In the year 1819, Keats decided to end his career due to financial pressure that was created because he was supporting his brother who had emigrated to America and was struggling with money. Although Keats was under financial pressure for a multitude of reasons, he still managed to write a lot of poems. Keats had to also manage at least another seven poems that he had written earlier that year, including ‘To Autumn ’..
