REFORM COMMUNITY DINING AT NON-KOSHER RESTAURANTS: There are about 5.5 million Jewish individuals in the U.S. today, with twelve percent (12%) of them keeping kosher, according to Rabbi Horowitz of the Manischewitz Company. According to Rabbi Jeffrey W. Goldwasser, “Reform Judaism encourages Jews to make Jewish choices in eating -- especially with regard to avoiding biblically prohibited foods like pork and shellfish. However, the Reform Movement is in no way critical of those who choose to eat in non-kosher restaurants. Few Reform Jews, if any, would choose to avoid restaurants with Buddhist statues. The Conservative Movement takes a liberal view towards other religions ....” According to the Jewish Federation of Northeastern New York (JFNENY), the Capital Region’s Jewish Community comprises highly educated individuals (two-thirds with graduate degrees or study) and half have household incomes above $100,000.
