Understanding by Design – Relations and Functions Mathematics 10 2 Learning Activities: Activity: - Randomly sort students into small groups of three or four. They will work in these groups for the entire class. Each day the groups should be resorted. - Pose problem. (Several problems for each day are provided. Choose one that you feel is most appropriate. If time permits assign additional problems or save them for future use.) - Students should work as a group, without teacher assistance, for 15 to 20 minutes. It would be preferable if students were given chart paper as well as scrap paper to work on. If students are struggling, direct them to visit other groups of students in the classroom to see what strategies other groups might be employing. - Student groups should organize their solution on chart paper and be prepared to present it to the class if called upon to do so. Debriefing: - Have several groups of students post their solutions. - Teacher and/or students will discuss solutions so that various strategies would be represented. (While teacher is circulating they will observe the strategies being used by the groups. One possible sequence of presentation would have the come common strategy being presented first followed by more unusual approaches.) Focus on questions such as: - What did you do to help you understand the problem? - What strategy did you use? - Why did you select this strategy? - If it didn’t work, what did you do next? - How do you know if your solution is reasonable? - What difficulties did you encounter? - Do you think there are easier ways to solve this problem? - What would you do differently next time? - How do you know you have all the possible solutions? Reflecting: - Wrap up by having students identify the mathematics in their solutions that they used to solve the problems. (for example: We looked for a pattern and made a table of values and then a graph) - Have students complete the problem solving self-assessment and/or journal. Time Permitting - Complete the second problem provided. - Have students create a problem that could be solved using the strategy that they used today. - Discuss any vocabulary words encountered during the lesson.
