In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks. John Muir For Christmas this year, my mother gave me a LEGO kit or a scale-model 1962 VW camper van: 1,400 little pieces, ready to assemble. One look, and I was instantly transported back to 1982 and the nine- week road trip I took with my amily that all. I don’t remember many details o the trip—I was only our years old—but one place I remember clearly: Yellowstone National Park. Bison, rivers o warm water, geysers, and vast wilderness: I had never seen anything like it. I returned as a college student to study wol and grizzly ecology. Between those two visits, the great wildres o 1988 had swept through Yellowstone, and much o the park still looked blackened and barren nine years later. A decade ater that I returned to Yellowstone once again and was stunned to nd a wealth o plant and animal species thriving in that once-scorched landscape. You didn’t have to be a scientist to see that the res weren’t actually devastating but cleansing, changing the landscape but leaving it healthy, strong and beautiul. Tose lessons rom Yellowstone have served me well this past year. As a sta, we were devastated when re destroyed our ofces in December 2012. But North Coast Land Conservancy itsel wasn’t devastated. It emerged as a dierent organization but one that is healthy, strong and beautiul. I’m grateul or my weeks on what we called “the bus” so many years ago, and to my parents or exposing me to that wild country at such a young age. Te land o- ers us so many valuable lessons, which is why I am so grateul or you. You have supported North Coast Land Conservancy and carried us through our year o up- heaval, believing in our resilience and helping us to regenerate. And in so doing, you have helped us protect land on the Oregon Coast in perpetuity, giving that land the opportunity to grow and change over time, come what may. Bison and geysers are exciting, but we at North Coast Land Conservancy have something no less inspiring: the Oregon Coast! All we need to keep it healthy, strong and beautiul is you. Tank you.
