Skyline at Madison These teams were on opposite ends of blow- outs last week; Skyline lost 35-15 at Highland and Madison beat Idaho Falls 36-14. They both need to put last week behind and focus on tonight’s game, which will go a long way in deter- mining the final playoff spot from 5A District 5-6. Skyline is coming off two disheartening losses. Madison is coming off its most balanced game of the season, one that surely gave Scott Berger and the Skyline coaching staff plenty to look at on film. Madison 30, Skyline 20 Bonneville at Idaho Falls There’s little left to play for but pride for these one-win teams. But pride can be a mighty motivator, something both Bonneville and Idaho Falls could use after tough losses a week ago. Idaho Falls 28, Bonne- ville 26 Blackfoot at Pocatello The Broncos sure look like the pick to win the 4A state title next month, rolling to a 6-0 start behind a physical defense and a big-play offense. Pocatello’s season has featured near-misses against Idaho Falls, Rigby and Century. The Indians don’t have to worry about another near miss this week. Blackfoot 41, Pocatello 18 Rigby at Preston This game looked a lot more interesting a month ago when Rigby was strug- gling and Preston was coming off a win over 3A power Snake River. But since that win, Preston has lost to Pocatello, Minico and Blackfoot, getting outscored 89-63 in the process. Rigby broke a three- game losing streak last week against Pocatello, and can wrap up a playoff spot with a win over Preston. Rigby 34, Preston 22 Teton at Snake River Snake River didn’t linger on its win over Shelley, instead following it with a 47-point win over American Falls. You can bet the Panthers will be focused on Teton tonight. Snake River 44, Teton 12 North Fremont at Firth The Nuclear Confer- ence title will be decided tonight in Firth and the timing couldn’t be better. The undermanned North Fremont Huskies are finally healthy, and the combination of Tanner Oberhansley and Michael Mower are running wild. Firth has regained its form after dropping two of four to start the year, thanks in large part to the play of Jackson Thompson on both sides of the ball. It’s going to come down to who plays best, and Firth’s best is just a little better. Firth 27, North Fremont 18 West Jefferson at Salmon This is another Nuclear Conference matchup with playoff implications. West Jefferson already has more wins this year than the past two seasons combined; a win tonight will likely guarantee the conference’s third playoff spot. To do that, the Pan- thers will have to win at Salmon, never an easy task. West Jefferson 18, Salmon 15 Challis at Butte County Butte County has caught the eyes of the state’s media, going from out of the weekly media poll to third in the latest 1A Division 1 rankings thanks to a dominating 6-0 start. To hit seven wins this week will require a dominating defense perfor- mance against Challis QB Brandon Hamilton, who has piled up nearly 2,500 total yards and 20 touch- downs this season. The teams met earlier this year, with Butte winning 79-36. The Vikings are healthier than they were in that meeting, but it won’t be enough. Butte County 56, Challis 36 Watersprings at Clark County The area’s two smallest schools square off in Dubois, and both need a win to keep their slim playoff hopes alive. Watersprings 35, Clark County 20 Rockland at Mackay Mackay can put itself in contention for the league title or watch its playoff hopes dimmed consider- ably, so there’s plenty on the line tonight. Jorge Carmona scored the other goal for Skyline in the 72nd minute. The Grizzlies face Madison on Saturday. The winner of that game will go to the state tournament as the 5A’s second seed behind Idaho Falls. The loss ends Hillcrest’s season at 11-4-2. BLACKFOOT 4, RIGBY 1: At Pocatello, Blackfoot scored twice in the first seven minutes and cruised to a win over Rigby in a 4A District 5-6 loser-out game. Jorge Velasquez scored off an assist Cesar Oseguera in the second minute and Andres Godinez scored on a penalty kick in the seventh to set the tone. “We came out on fire,” Blackfoot coach Liam Pope said. “We played fast and hard. And when they had the ball, we were on them.” Jordan Garcia made it 3-0 in the 39th minute and freshman Junior Labra scored his first varsity goal in the 77th minute to close the scoring. Blackfoot (5-7-2) plays at top-seeded Century in a los- er-out, winner-to-state game at 11 a.m. Saturday. PRESTON 2, CENTURY 1: At Pocatello, Preston knocked off top-seeded Century to win its second straight 4A District 5-6 title. The Indians will open state tournament play against Mid- dleton on Oct. 23 at Post Falls High School. Century will host Blackfoot in a winner-to-state game at 11 a.m. Saturday. Girls soccer BLACKFOOT 1, RIGBY 1 (Blackfoot won 2-0 in PKs): At Preston, Blackfoot wiped out a 1-0 deficit and then survived two overtime periods and a penalty kick shootout in a 4A District 5-6 loser-out game to keep its season alive. Rigby took a 1-0 lead in the 60th minute on a goal from Rylee Stanger. The Broncos tied the game 10 minutes later on a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box. After a score- less overtime, Rigby missed its first three penalties while the Broncos scored on two of theirs to pull out the win. “These last few games we started playing the kind of ball I knew we could play,” Rigby coach Marciano Perez said. “And as a coach, that’s all you can ask.” Blackfoot will play a winner- to-state game against Preston at 11 a.m. Saturday in Preston. CENTURY 2, PRESTON 0: At Preston, Century won the 4A District 5-6 title with a win over Preston. The Diamondbacks will open state tournament play against Middleton at Lake City High School. Preston will host Blackfoot in a winner-to-state game Saturday. MADISON 4, HIGHLAND 0: At Pocatello, Madison knocked off Highland in a 5A District 5-6 loser-out game. No other details were available. The Bobcats (7-4-6) will play at Hillcrest at 1 p.m. Saturday in a loser-out, winner-to-state game. Volleyball IDAHO FALLS 3, MADISON 1: At Idaho Falls, the Tigers prevailed in their regular season finale 25-20, 26-28, 25-7, 25-12, and claimed the district’s top seed with a tie- breaker. “We decided we wanted to play flat in the second set,” Idaho Falls coach Wendy Johnson said. “But then they kicked it in gear in the third and fourth sets.” Taylor Sutton had 18 kills and four blocks for the Tigers. Maya Taylor had 18 kills, 12 digs and two blocks, while Bailee Mills had 12 kills and five blocks. Idaho Falls (31-9, 8-2) takes the first seed into the 5A District 5-6 tournament in a tiebreaker over Bonneville and will also host the tournament. The Tigers will play Skyline in the first round. HIGHLAND 3, BONNE- VILLE 2: At Pocatello, Highland outlasted Bonneville 27-29, 25-16, 15-25, 25-22, 20-22 in a marathon five-set match to wrap up the regular season. Bonneville coach Chantal McMurtrey said it was too bad someone had to lose. “It was a loud, intense gym and both teams played at a really high level,” McMurtrey said. “Game one really could have gone either way. Game five, it was one point after the other, neck and neck all the way.” Haylie Keck led the Bees with 23 kills, 18 digs and one ace, Halle Hess had 12 kills and three aces and Kyla Udy and Kylie Lott had eight kills each. Kiley McMurtey and Kalli Harris each had 20 digs. Bonneville (28-4) and Idaho Falls both finished with con- ference records of 8-2, split their regular season meetings and split against Highland. McMurtrey said District 91 ath- letic director Kerry Martin deter- mined Idaho Falls as the top seed and host for next week’s 5A District 5-6 tournament because the Tigers defeated the Bees in three sets while Bonneville topped I.F. in five earlier in the season. Bonneville plays Hillcrest on Tuesday in the first round. HILLCREST 3, SKYLINE 0: At Hillcrest High School, Hill- crest wrapped up the regular season with a 25-11, 25-15, 25-21 5A District 5-6 victory over Skyline. “We started out a little rough, but we got better every game, and you can’t ask for more than that,” Skyline coach Ceanna Larson said. Terrica Landon led the Griz- zlies with five kills and eight digs, Hannah Morales had six kills and two blocks and freshman Jesse Neff chipped in four kills, two blocks and 15 digs. The Grizzlies begin district tournament play Tuesday. SHELLEY 3, SOUTH FREMONT 0: At St. Anthony, Shelley closed out the regular season with a 25-11, 25-20, 25-13 Mountain Rivers Con- ference victory over South Fremont. Brooke Wright led the attack with 10 kills while adding nine digs and two aces. Sam Waite added nine kills and seven digs, Alexis Thompson had seven kills, two blocks, three aces and five digs, Hannah Hansen had four aces and 15 digs and Kallie Brown chipped in three aces and 33 assists. The Russets (28-6, 6-0) will take the top seed into the 3A District 6 tournament, which begins Saturday at South Fremont High School. FIRTH 3, MALAD 1: At Firth, the Cougars topped Malad 25-19, 25-18, 19-25, 25-20 in a rematch of last year’s state title game. Seniors Bailey Nelson and Ashley Sanders dominated on senior night, with Nelson pounding down 23 kills and Sanders adding 17 kills. Sally Taylor and Kellie Tucker each had six kills, freshman Ashlee Adams had 14 digs and Natalie Gibson had 36 assists. The Cougars (21-9, 7-1) will take the top seed into next week’s 2A District 6 tournament at West Jefferson. Firth will open against the host Panthers. SALMON 3, RIRIE 1: At Salmon, Salmon bounced back from a second-set loss to beat Ririe 28-26, 16-25, 26-24, 25-11 to close out the regular season on senior night. Lone senior Carly Knudson led Salmon with 15 kills and five blocks. Bailee Burgess added 33 assists and Logan Deutchman had 15 digs. Salmon will take the second seed into the 2A District 6 tour- nament, which begins Tuesday at West Jefferson High School. WEST JEFFERSON 3, NORTH FREMONT 1: At Ashton, West Jefferson topped North Fremont 24-26, 27-25, 26-24, 25-22 in a tough Nuclear Conference match on the Huskies senior night. Senior Alexa Litton led the way with 14 kills, 18 digs and two aces. Fellow seniors Chan- dler Beard (five kills, four aces) and Katie Harrigfeld (five kills, 36 assists) also had big nights for North Fremont. It was also Dig Pink night in Ashton, and the two teams raised more than $3,000 to fight breast cancer. North Fremont opens the 2A District 6 tournament as the fourth seed, and will face third- seeded Ririe on Tuesday at West Jefferson High School. BUTTE COUNTY 3, GRACE 0: At Butte County, the Pirates handled Grace 25-10, 25-13, 25-16 on senior night. “The seniors played really well,” Butte County coach Jody Coburn said. Butte County’s Ashlyn Taylor had 10 kills, Conlan Coburn had 23 digs and Punky Collins had 19 assists. Butte County (11-6, 2-2) will face Grace again on Tuesday. The winner of that game will take on Challis. Skyline keeps hope alive with 2-0 win POST REGISTER LOCAL ROUNDUP
