Bees save the best for last B y JEFF PINKHAM jpinkham@postregister.com SHELLEY — Forget the mental errors. Forget the sloppy turnovers. Heck, Shelley High School foot- ball fans can even chuckle now at the roughing the punter penalty that wiped out a highlight-reel return from Jason Hathaway. These Shelley Russets are far from perfect. But they are still Mountain Rivers Conference champs. And until someone beats them when it counts, they’re still the defending state champs. The Russets sprinkled in just enough big plays to go with a dominating defense Friday in dispatching Sugar-Salem 27-0. The win gave Shelley another perfect conference season and another confer- ence title — the first step in what the hope is a third straight 3A state title in a month. “We can’t be complacent,” Shelle coach Travis Hobson said. “We got a win. We won the conference title. But we can’t play like that if we want to be state champions.” The Russets (5-2, 3-0) came out ready to shake off their month-long funk, forcing Sugar-Salem to punt on its first drive, then marching 55 yards on 10 plays and taking a 7-0 lead on Jonathon Car- ranza’s 11-yard run up the middle with 4:44 left in the opening quarter. But Shelley fell back into its mis- take-prone ways. With a chance to brea the game open early, the Russets turned the ball over on back-to-back drives. The first came a minute into the second quarter when Tyler Fredrickson’s pass was tipped in the air by Tyler Bean and intercepted by Jared Purser at the Diggers’ 7. That ended on a positive note when Preston Erikson broke through the line on a third and 15 from the 2 and brought down Derek Ostermiller for a safety. The Russets threatened on the next drive following a big return from Jason Hathaway. But on second and 4 from the Diggers’ 26, Fredrickson lost the ball on a handoff and the Diggers recovered. “We left four touchdowns out there, and three of them were mental (errors),” Hobson said. “We’ve always been a disci- plined team, and right now we have too many dumb, untimely penalties. And we can’t have that.” But with the defense dominating — Sugar didn’t have a first down until midway through the second quarter and minus-9 yards on its first three drives — the Russets were just a big play away from putting the game away. Bean gave them that big play, hauling in a long pass from Fredrickson, shaking off a tackler and racing into the end zone for an 80-yard score with 1:52 left in the first half. That gave Shelley a 15-0 lead, an insurmountable margin with the wa the defense was playing. “I just wanted the touchdown,” said Bean, who added two sacks on defense. Sugar-Salem missed two field goals late in the first half and never really threatened to score in the second half, finishing with just 177 yards of total offense. “They’re studs up front, and we had trouble running the ball,” Diggers coach Tyler Richins said. Shelley didn’t exactly light it up either. Fredrickson led the way with 109 yards and a 50-yard TD on the ground. But take away the 80-yard pass to Bean and the 50-yard Fredrickson run and the Russets had just 193. The Russets hope to end the regular season on a positive note when they host 4A Pocatello for a nonconference game next week. Sugar-Salem (4-3, 1-1) has secured a playoff spot, but hopes to earn the second seed when it finishes against rival South Fremont on Thursday. “We have to rebound,” Richins said. “South Fremont’s a very good team, but we want to secure that second seed.” Russets wrap up another district title B y PAUL LAMBERT plambert@postregister.com Idaho Falls High School was one play away from a story- book ending Friday night at Ravsten Stadium. But Bonneville senior line- backer Colby Sexton slammed that book closed with a game- ending sack, coming unblocked on a failed Idaho Falls play-ac- tion attempt. Sexton’s walk-off sack pre- served a 24-18 advantage for the Bees, lifting the seniors on the team to a memorable 5A District 5-6 win over the Tigers. “Us seniors have never beat I.F., but we came out tonight, played good defense and had fun, and that’s what football’s all about,” Sexton said. Sexton lined up as the left outside linebacker in Bonne- ille’s cover-3 defense, and reached the backfield at a dead sprint. Idaho Falls quarterback Jake Thornberry never had a chance, pulled down from behind just seconds after starting his rollout. The game favored Bonne- ille early as the Bees opened a 14-0 halftime lead. Senior quar- terback Bradley Smith ran for a score and passed for another in the first half for the Bees. Idaho Falls got one of those scores back early in the second half, scoring just 20 seconds into the third quarter on a pass from Thornberry to Wilson Dobson. Thornberry ran for another score in the third and added a third touchdown in the fourth — though the Tigers failed to convert on any conversion plays on their three touchdowns. I.F.’s senior quarterback also reached the 1,000-yard mark for the season on a 30-yard run on the first play of the game. Bonneville receiver Tyler Perkins put Bonneville on top for good with a 4-yard recep- tion from Smith, and kicker Alec Rierson booted a field goal for the six-point cushion. That set up the late drive by the Tigers, snuffed by Sexton’s stunt as the horn sounded. “They got down early but came back and put themselves in a position to win the game,” Idaho Falls coach Pete Molino said. “The outcome is dictated by how we play on the field, and they kept fighting and I’m proud of the way we finished tonight.” Logan Elverud had a pair of interceptions for Idaho Falls, and senior teammate Jared Grimaud had a pair of sacks as Molino celebrated his team defense. Bonneville senior Kahill Salter was another offensive star, rushing for a career-best 169 yards on 21 carries. “The line was getting good holes for me, and we’ve been working towards this all week,” Salter said. “They started coming back against us, but we finally beat I.F. and I couldn’t be any more happy.” Idaho Falls (1-7, 0-4) will close out the regular season at 4 p.m. Oct. 25 against rival Skyline in the Emotion Bowl, and Bonneville (2-5, 1-3) moves on to face Highland in Pocatello on Friday. “We played good defense, contained them, and the O-line was great running the football tonight,” Bonneville coach Fred Armstrong said. B2 Post Register Saturday, October 18, 2014 SPORTS HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL Idaho Falls senior quarterback Jake Thornberry tries to get rid of the ball before getting sacked by Bonneville senior linebacker Kaden Johnson on Friday at Ravsten Stadium. Pat Sutphin / psutphin@postregister.com POST REGISTER At Firth, Tanner Oberhansley piled up 162 yards on 26 carries and scored two touchdowns to lead North Fremont to a 22-16 Nuclear Conference win over Firth on Friday. It is the Huskies’ first win over the Cougars since 2009, and gave North Fremont its third conference win and a playoff berth. Oberhansley started the scoring with a 3-yard TD run, and Firth responded with a 78-yard touchdown run from Jackson Thompson. The Huskies took a 16-8 halftime lead on a 4-yard pass from Stockton Dye to Tevyn Bell. The score didn’t change until the fourth quarter, when Oberhansley extended North Fremont’s lead to 22-8 with a 9-yard run. Firth’s Lucus Orme caught a 26-yard pass from Brodie Cate, who found Zak Johnson for the two-point con- ersion to cut the margin to 22-16, but that was as close as the Cougars would get. Firth coach Keith Drake said turnovers and penalties took a toll on the Cougars, as did North Fremont’s duo of Ober - hansley and Michael Mower. “My hat’s off to coach (Ben) Lenz’s team,” Drake said. “We knew their line gets off the ball really well. Oberhansley and Mower do a great job running the ball. We knew it was gonna be a tough task. We didn’t do enough to stop them.” Mower had 95 yards on 18 carries for North Fremont (4-3, 3-0), which finishes at Salmon on Friday. Thompson rushed for 221 yards on 22 carries and Cate completed 3 for 10 passes for 46 yards for Firth (4-3, 3-1), which concludes the regular season Friday at Ririe. The Cougars have also clinched a playoff spot. BLACKFOOT 38, POCATELLO 12: At Pocatello, Blackfoot trailed 6-0 after one quarter but outscored Pocatello 38-6 the rest of the way to earn a 4A District 5-6 victory and wrap up a playoff berth. Jarom Campos hauled ina 48-yard TD pass from Bryant Kimbrough in the first quarter to give Poky an early lead. But Matt Peterson answered with two TD catches from Pacen Hayes — from 15 and 57 yards. Damon Bodkin added TD runs of 24 and 4 yards and Andrew Hatch had a 12-yard TD catch from Hayes in the third quarter, and Peterson chipped in a 25-yard field goal in the fourth. Peterson finished with five catch- es for 131 yards. Hayes completed 10 of 21 passes for 241 yards and Bodkin added 61 yards rushing on nine carries. The top-ranked Broncos (7-0, 3-0) will close the game at Rigby on Oct. 24 in a game that will decide the district title. RIGBY 42, PRESTON 7: At Preston, Rigby broke open a score- less game with three second-quarter touchdowns and the Trojans rolled to a 4A District 5-6, playoff-clinching victory. Drew Zagula started the scoring with an 11-yard TD run 13 seconds into the second quarter. Hayden Livingston took over from there, breaking of an 86-yard TD run at 9:27 and adding a 20-yard TD run with 1:50 left in the half. Tyrel Phillips scored twice in the second half to put it away, and Matt Anderson capped the scoring with a 1-yard TD run with 6:09 left. The Trojans (4-3, 3-0) close out the regular season at home against Blackfoot on Oct. 24. The winner will claim the district title. SNAKE RIVER 49, TETON 7: At Moreland, No. 2 Snake River built on a 35-7 halftime lead and rolled to a homecoming win over nonconfer- ence opponent Teton. Wyatt Vogler did the most dam- age for the Panthers, scoring four of their seven touchdowns. He racked up 184 yards and three TDs on nine carries — two in the first half — and caught a 10-yard TD pass. Collin Bingham had 102 yards and a TD on 11 carries. The game concluded the regular season for Teton (1-7) while Snake River (6-1) hosts Marsh Valley in its regular-season finale Friday. BUTTE COUNTY 52, CHALLIS 28: At Arco, junior running back Zac Harrell scored five of Butte County’s eight touchdowns in the Pirates’ con- ference win. Filling in for injured players Jeremie Hjelm and Schooner Collins, Harrell piled up 254 yards on 17 carries and also caught a 69-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jon Isham. The win gives Butte County the conference championship and the right the host the first two rounds of the 1A Division I state playoffs if the Pirates so choose. Challis will take the second seed. Butte County led 26-14 at half- time and 39-20 after three quarters, and Thorngren said he anticipated a tough game from the Vikings. Brandon Hamilton did his dam- age for Challis, rushing for 248 yards and throwing for 269 more. Freshman Brett Waymire, who had two touchdowns, rushed for 134 yards on 19 carries and Isham had 50 yards on 11 carries. Isham also completed 2 of 3 passes for 82 yards and a touchdown for the Pirates (7-0, 3-0), who play Friday at Grace. CLARK COUNTY 62, WATERSPRINGS 21: At Dubois, Watersprings fell behind 22-0 at halftime and dropped a conference game to Clark County. Watersprings coach John Yadon said the Warriors entered the game with four starters injured. Freshmen were called up to fill those slots, and starter Taite Martin played at less than 100 percent. Quarterback Mark Mathison led the Warriors in rushing, piling up 82 yards on 23 carries for a touchdown. He completed 4 of 10 passes for 69 yards and a touchdown. Kyson Poletti threw an 80-yard TD pass and rushed for 37 yards on 10 carries. Senior Ben Hayes led Watersprings in receiving, making four catches for 141 yards and two touchdowns. Because Sho-Ban canceled its season — thus canceling next week’s scheduled game — Watersprings (1-6, 1-3 conference) must await the results of Mackay’s regular-season finale game to learn its playoff fate. ROCKLAND 26, MACKAY 8: At Mackay, Rockland broke away from a tight game to hand Mackay a con- ference loss. The Miners trailed 6-0 at halftime and 12-0 after three quarters and were outscored 14-8 in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Jacob Green, who completed 9 of 27 passes for 98 yards and two interceptions, scored Mackay’s touchdown in the fourth quarter on a 5-ard run. Justin Johnson led Mackay with 131 yards on 13 carries and caught a pass for 16 yards. Wes Roscoe had 63 yards on 10 carries and caught three passes for 42 yards for the Miners (3-4, 1-2), who play Friday at North Gem in their regular season finale. WEST JEFFERSON 58, SALMON 38: At Salmon, West Jefferson moved to 2-2 in Nuclear Conference play with a road win. No further details were available. Salmon (2-4, 1-2) hosts North Fremont on Friday in its regular sea- son finale while West Jefferson (3-4, 2-2) ends the regular season at home against Wendell.
