At Hillcrest, Roxanne Hoffman had a hat trick and was one of four goal scorers for the Knights as the Hillcrest High School girls soccer team opened 5A District 5-6 play with a 7-0 win over Idaho Falls. Hoffman had one goal in the first half and two in the second half. Hillcrest coach Dave Coffman said he joked with Hoffman afterwards because she had forgotten her cleats. “She was wearing bor- rowed cleats,” Coffman said. “I told her she’s gonna have to buy those cleats now. We were on fire today. The ball move- ment today was all over the place.” Taya McBride began Hillcrest’s scoring with a 15th minute goal. Tarynda Bateman assisted Katry Redd on a 28th minute goal and Hoffman scored eight minutes later to send the Knights into halftime ahead 3-0. McBride scored off a Bateman assist in the 42nd minute and Bateman scored in the 59th minute off a Taylor Gregory assist. Hoffman scored in the 70th minute off a Gregory assist and wrapped up her hat trick with an unassisted 77th minute goal. Hillcrest (4-1-0, 1-0-0) next plays Monday against rival Bonneville at Thunder Stadium. SKYLINE 3, CENTURY 3: At Pocatello, Century rallied from a 3-0 deficit to end with a 3-3 tie against Skyline. Citlalli Sanchez scored in the 16th and 19th minutes with assists from Nicole Morrison and Haley Smith, respectively. Morrison assisted Megan Aumeier on a 56th minute goal. Skyline (2-0-1) next plays Saturday at Madison. HIGHLAND 2, BONNE- VILLE 1: At Iona, Jackie Mendoza made a long run and scored the Bees’ only goal in a 5A District 5-6 loss to Highland. The Rams led 2-0 when Mendoza picked up the ball inside her own half, fended off a defender and slotted a shot into the corner to cut the lead in half. “It took a lot of work to score that goal,” Bonneville coach Michael Wedman said. Bonneville (1-3-0, 0-1-0) plays at Rigby on Saturday. SHELLEY 14, SOUTH FREMONT 1: At Shelley, Brittany Baron scored four goals and Shelley cruised to a 3A District 6 victory over South Fremont. Kira Marlow, Holly Dooley and Tymber Tenerowicz each scored twice while Brie Stumbo, Abby Cran- dall, Hannah Haroldsen and Gwean Marlow also scored for the Russets. The coaches voted Haroldsen and defender Emma Stohl as game MVPs. “A big part of that was effort,” Shelley coach Jim Gregory said. Shelley (3-0-0, 1-0-0) hosts Aberdeen on Sat- urday. NORTH FREMONT 9, ABERDEEN 0: At Aberdeen, Kylee Masters and Allyx Lenz scored four goals each in a nonconference shutout of Aberdeen. Masters, a senior, scored North Fremont’s first goal while Lenz, a sophomore, scored twice later in the first half to give the Huskies a 3-0 halftime lead. Cynthia Martinez scored early in the second half, followed by Lenz and three goals from Masters within the next eight minutes. Lenz found the back of the net with 15 seconds left to wrap up her day. North Fremont coach Ethan Jones said everyone was involved in providing scoring opportunities. “They had a lot of chances,” North Fremont coach Ethan Jones said. “We worked the ball up and down our wings. It started from our defense.” North Fremont (3-1-0) next plays Saturday at home against conference oppo- nent Sugar-Salem. TETON 1, SNAKE RIVER 0: At Driggs, Teton’s Shelyn Hansen knocked in the lone goal of the game in a non- conference win over Snake River. Hansen scored off an assist from Jessica Naylor in the 76th minute in what Teton coach Sandy Buck- staff described as a mad scramble in front of the goal. Buckstaff said the Redskins outshot the Pan- thers 21 to 4. The corner kicks were also 9-0 in favor of Teton. “Give credit to their keeper,” Buckstaff said. “She played very, very well. We just kept working hard and eventually good things happen.” Teton (2-0-0) next plays Tuesday at home against conference opponent Shelley. Boys soccer SKYLINE 3, CENTURY 2: At the Idaho Falls Soccer Complex, Skyline senior Jorge Carmona knocked in the game-winning goal in the 67th minute in the Griz- zlies’ nonconference win over Century. The goal was Carmo- na’s second of the day, as he opened the scoring with a penalty kick in the fourth minute. Skyline coach Byraun Moretz said the Grizzlies won by outworking the Dia- mondbacks. “Century by far is clearly the dominant 4A team,” Moretz said. “I’d be so bold as to say the state cham- pion. They move the ball really well. We grinded and grinded.” Century tied it up five minutes after Carmona’s first goal. The Grizzlies took the lead again off Josue Maja- no’s 21st minute goal, but the Diamondbacks knocked in an equalizer in the 31st to go into halftime knotted at 2-2. Skyline (4-0-0) next plays Saturday against Madison at the soccer complex. IDAHO FALLS 1, HILL- CREST 0: At the Idaho Falls Soccer Complex, the Tigers opened 5A District 5-6 play win a win over Hillcrest. After playing a score- less first half, Kobi Brower scored off a free kick from 50 yards out in the 48th minute. “The first half, we were just outplayed,” Idaho Falls coach Cory Steele said. “They were playing at a much higher intensity than we were. The second half, we stopped playing scared, picked up the intensity and it ended up being a pretty even match.” Idaho Falls (3-0-1, 1-0) next plays Tuesday at Madison. HIGHLAND 2, BONNE- VILLE 1: At Highland, Bon- neville fell to the Rams in its first 5A District 5-6 contest. Highland scored in the 10th and 15th minutes. Bonneville’s Mikey Garcia scored in the 34th minute to cut the lead to 2-1. Bonneville had an oppor- tunity to tie the game in the 55th minute with a penalty kick, but missed it. “We were tough on them,” Bonneville coach Chris Watts said. “We pressed them a lot.” Bonneville (3-0-1) next plays Saturday at home against Rigby. SHELLEY 3, SOUTH FREMONT 2: At Shelley, the Russets built a 2-0 lead and held on for a 3A District 6 victory over South Fremont. Jordan Moulton, Frank Stumbo and Alex Pena scored for the Russets. “Our guys were tired, a couple of them were dealing with illness, but they really focused hard at the end,” Shelley coach Wes Stumbo said. “It was a good effort overall.” Tyler Murri and Jose Escobar scored late in the second half for South Fremont. Shelley (2-0-0, 1-0-0) hosts Aberdeen on Sat- urday. ABERDEEN 3, NORTH FREMONT 2: At Aberdeen, North Fremont fell to Aber- deen in a game that had four penalty kicks between the two teams. Aberdeen took a 3-0 halftime lead off three goals scored within five minutes. Two of them were penalty kicks. Aaron Williams scored for the Huskies in the 65th minute and Seth Toenjes knocked in a penalty kick in the 73rd minute. “It was just a tough game,” North Fremont coach Shane Jacobson said. “We played good defense there in the second half.” North Fremont (0-4-0) next plays Saturday at home against conference oppo- nent Sugar-Salem. Volleyball CHALLIS 2, CAREY 1; CHALLIS 2, HAGERMAN 0: At Carey, Challis rolled to a pair of nonconference vic- tories, beating Carey 26-28, 25-13, 15-10 and Hagerman 25-8, 25-17. Brielle Sheppeard returned to the lineup after sitting out Wednesday’s match with an illness and finished with 29 kills and 11 digs. Abby Sensabaugh added eight kills, 10 digs and six aces, Tara Cham- berlain had 27 assists and Savannah D’Orazio added 19 assists. Challis (2-1) plays at Salmon on Tuesday. Christian — no one in Idaho is. But the Bobcats showed they can play with a Boise team, falling 35-21 despite five interceptions from quarterback Konner Stoneberg, who also threw for 389 yards and two TDs. Bonneville showed flashes of potential in its opening 61-20 loss and came out relatively healthy. But Madison showed even more, and the Bees will have to wait for their first 5A District 5-6 win. Madison 28, Bon- neville 24 Idaho Falls at Rigby The Trojans put a beating on Century to open the season, and it could have been much worse if Rigby’s starters had played deeper into the game. With nearly every key player returning from last year’s surprising conference championship team, Rigby expected to be good. Not sure they expected to be this good. Junior quarterback Hayden Livingston showed efficiency (14 of 15 com- pletions) and big-play ability 329 yards passing, three TDs), Drew Zagula rushed for three scores, and the defense made a statement. It’s bad news for a Tigers team that was run over in a 42-7 loss at Eagle. Rigby 42, Idaho Falls 28 Century at Hillcrest Hillcrest fought to the finish last week in Black- foot but didn’t get a win to show for its effort. The payoff comes this week, when the Knights should overpower a Diamond- backs team that can’t match Hillcrest athlete for athlete. Expect Beau Crouch, Morgan Pyper and company to run wild and claim the Knights’ first win of 2014. Hillcrest 27, Century 10 Skyline at Blackfoot The most surprising outcome from Week 1 was Skyline’s closer-than-ex- pected loss to defending 5A state champion Coeur d’Alene. The Grizzlies pushed the Vikings into the fourth quarter, showing a fight the team has lacked in recent seasons. Unfortunately for the Grizz, Blackfoot got another strong perfor- mance from sophomore QB Pacen Hayes (291 yards passing, three TDs) and plenty of defense in a 20-14 win over Hillcrest. If the Broncos can recreate the formula of physical front lines and explosive skill players they had during their long stretch of dominance a few years ago, they could challenge Rigby in 4A District 5-6. Blackfoot 23, Skyline 16 Shelley at Teton If anyone doubted Shelley, and there might have been some of you out there who thought the Russets might struggle to replace a senior class that won back-to-back state titles, Saturday’s dom- inating win over Faith Lutheran of Las Vegas was exhibit A why the boys in black and red are the dom- inant program in eastern Idaho. Shelley’s defense was in midseason form. And the offense, led by sophomore QB Bryon Leckington, was better than expected. That’s bad news for future opponents hoping the Russets might take a step back to the pack in 2014. Shelley 38, Teton 12 West Jefferson at South Fremont West Jefferson shook off a 17-game losing streak last week by blowing past Soda Springs — a new coach and a group of moti- vated players seeming to quickly fit together after such a short time together. South Fremont gave up nearly half a hundred in the first half of last week’s loss to Snake River. Despite the first impres- sions, it says here that West Jefferson isn’t quite ready to start a winning streak. South Fremont 19, West Jefferson 12 Bear Lake at Sugar- Salem Sugar-Salem lost to the top 2A team in the state last week, falling to Declo despite an early lead and a late surge. The Diggers are not going to make it two straight losses to 2A teams. Sugar-Salem 31, Bear Lake 9 Jackson (Wyo.) at North Fremont Jackson ran over, around and through the Teton defense last week with what Redskins coach Brody Birch said was the best group of backs he’s seen in years. It’s a good bet Huskies coach Ben Lenz and his staff was on hand to witness the show with his team on a bye week. The Huskies will need more than a good game plan to stop the Broncs. Jackson 42, North Fremont 20 Firth at Soda Springs Pity the poor Cardi- nals, who get the honor of playing an angry Firth team looking to take out its frustrations following a Week 1 loss to West Side. If you’re looking for a sure thing, look no further than this. Firth 35, Soda Springs 0 Malad at Ririe Ririe lost an overtime shootout to the Star Valley (Wyo.) JV last week, so they should enter tonight’s game against Malad with confidence. Confidence alone won’t be enough to beat the Dragons. Malad 21, Ririe 12 Challis at Raft River Challis quarterback Brandon Hamilton had a game for the ages last week, rushing for 198 yards, throwing for 180 more and piling up 14 tackles in a close win over Mackay. That should be enough to pick the Vikings. But it’s not. Raft River brings back plenty of talent and it’s playing at home, which should be just enough. Raft River 41, Challis 38 Butte County at Mackay It’s hard enough for 1A teams to find one good runner; Butte County showed off four in a sea- son-opening win over Watersprings that was closer than expected. All four also play promi- nent roles on a new-look defense. Simply put, the Pirates have too much talent for Mackay to over- come. Butte County 32, Mackay 18 Dietrich at Watersprings Dietrich an into a buzzsaw last year, falling to eventual state champion Salmon River in the 1A Division state semifinals. That loss has provided the Blue Devils all the moti- vation they need for 2014. Dietrich 29, Watersprings 12 Clark County at Shoshone JV It’s tough to predict what you’ll get from a 1A JV team — how many good players can a 1A school have, anyway? Sho- shone has a good program, so they’ve got enough to present a challenge. But Clark County has the numbers, and the athletes, to answer that challenge.
