Crouch, who completed 5 of 7 passes, including three that went for 30 yards or more. “We had high expec- tations last year and it didn’t work out. It’s been a tough transition, but I do feel more comfortable. It’s taken two years but it’s getting better.” Hillcrest showed off its improved passing attack after three straight runs moved the Knights from the 50 to the 12 on the opening drive. Crouch faked a handoff to Pyper and then found Noah Lewis wide open for a touchdown. “It’s like night and day,” Marshall said of Crouch and the passing game. “We’re beginning to execute the offense better.” Hillcrest executed nearly everything perfectly in the first half, scoring on its first five drives in a variety of ways. The second drive, which ended with a 26-yard TD from Porter Empey on an option play, was all runs. The next drive was two runs, the second a 78-yarder from Crouch that showed off his power (he ran through one tackler early) and his speed (he ran away from the safety late). Crouch added a 1-yard TD run on the next drive, which featured six runs. The next drive had a 30-yard pass from Crouch to Empey and ended with a 6-yard TD run from Morgan Pyper (12 carries, 85 yards). Century finally got on the board to make it 33-7, and Hillcrest responded with a 46-yard pass from Crouch to Brayden Barrus and a 16-yard shovel pass from Crouch to Empey that finished in the end zone and made the score 40-7 at half - time. The big-play ability of the passing game is some- thing that should catch the attention of future oppo- nents. “When you can throw it deep, it keeps defenses guessing,” Crouch said. The second half was a display in running out the clock, and the Knights did that well, too. All in all it was a big win for the Knights, who had ust one victory a year ago and lost a heartbreaker to Blackfoot in the opener last week. “This is a great confi- dence builder,” Marshall said. “We found some kids who can catch the ball and our offensive line played well. It’s something we can build on.” The Knights (1-1) return to action at Rigby on Friday. POST REGISTER At Driggs, senior running back Jason Hathaway scored two of his three touchdowns before halftime and Shelley rolled to a 40-7 3A District 6 win over Teton on Friday night. Hathaway finished as Shelley’s leading rusher with 91 yards on seven carries and two touch- downs and receiver with three catches for 76 yards and a touchdown. “I thought we were able to execute our game plan as we designed it,” Shelley head coach Travis Hobson said. “I’m proud of our boys.” Sophomore Bryon Leck- ington completed 8 of 12 passes for 169 yards for two touchdowns and no inter- ceptions and also rushed for 10 yards on five carries in his second varsity start. Bracken Nelson caught two passes for 65 yards and an interception. Shelley (2-0) hosts Manti, Utah, on Friday. Manti is the only team to have beaten the Russets in the last two seasons, taking a 21-0 win over Shelley in Utah last year. “That will be a big game,” Hobson said. SUGAR-SALEM 26, BEAR LAKE 6: At Sugar City, Derek Ostermiller ran for 75 yards and three touchdowns and the Diggers pulled away late to beat Bear Lake in a nonconference game. Ostermiller had TD runs of 5, 16 and 42 yards. Ryan Hawkes got a 15-yard TD pass from Ethan Arnold for the Diggers’ other score. The Diggers defense gave up 95 yards rushing to Brennen Williams but held the rest of the team to minus- 27 yards on the ground. The Diggers (1-1) host Snake River on Friday. FIRTH 36, SODA SPRINGS 6: At Soda Springs, Firth shrugged off a slow start before blowing past Soda Springs for a non- conference win. The Cougars trailed 6-0 after one quarter, then scored 22 in the second quarter to take command. “We came out a little slow and (Soda) got a lot better after that loss to West Jefferson,” Firth coach Keith Drake said. Jackson Thompson sparked the rally when he broke free for a 70-yard TD run. The Cougars then scored two touchdowns late in the quarter, both on 10-yard Brodie Cate touch- down passes. The first went to Thompson, the second to Lucus Orme. Thompson added a 36-yard fumble return for a score in the third quarter before Orme caught another TD pass from Cate, again from 10 yards out, in the fourth. Thompson led the Cougars with 137 yards rush- ing and topped the defense with seven tackles. Firth (1-1) hosts Malad on Friday. SOUTH FREMONT 20, WEST JEFFERSON 14: At St. Anthony, South Fremont’s defense came up with a defensive touchdown and a late goal-line stand to pull out a nonconference win over West Jefferson. “The defense ruled the day for us,” South Fremont coach Chad Hill said. Junior Coverley was all over the field, scoring the first touchdown on a 60-yard punt return while adding dou- ble-digit tackles and a team- high 93 yards rushing. “He’s small, but he gives you everything he’s got,” Hill said. Blake Bartschi caught a 21-yard touchdown pass from Junior Gonzalez (7 of 13, 71 yards; 43 yards rush- ing) while Drew Stoddard scored on a 20-yard fumble return in the second quarter. The defense clinched it late in the fourth following a South Fremont turnover at the 3. The defense forced a turnover of its own and the offense was able to run out the clock. “This is exactly what we needed,” Hill said. The Cougars (1-1) play at Ririe on Friday. JACKSON 50, NORTH FREMONT 30: At Ashton, Jackson Hole pulled away from a 28-18 halftime lead to hand North Fremont a loss in its season opener. The Broncs shut out the Huskies in the third quarter, which North Fremont head coach Ben Lenz said was a turning point against a bigger Jackson team. “We got the ball coming out the second half and we fumbled on the second play,” Lenz said. “We kinda traded back and forth a little bit and held our own and they over- whelmed us a little bit with their size and athleticism.” Junior running back Tanner Oberhansley led the Huskies in rushing with 160 yards on 20 carries and completed two of four passes for 93 yards. Michael Mower, who left the game with a con- cussion, rushed for 127 yards and two TDs on 14 carries and caught a pass for 73 yards and a touchdown. Luke Nedrow played quar- terback for the Huskies, who lost two-year starting quar- terback Shane Hill to an ACL tear in team camp. “He did a great job for the first game,” Lenz said. “Just exceptional.” North Fremont (0-1) plays Friday at Aberdeen. MALAD 41, RIRIE 7: At Ririe, Malad put up 21 points in the first quarter en route to a nonconference win over Ririe. Ririe coach Josh Stewart said the Bulldogs were in good position to add to their second quarter touchdown, but then fumbled. “If we had gotten the score there, who knows, maybe we could’ve gotten some momentum,” Stewart said. “Credit to them. I felt like they were a lot more physical than we were.” Quarterback Kobe Nelson completed 5 of 14 attempted passes for 85 yards, one touchdown and one intercep- tion and led Ririe in rushing with 60 yards on 18 carries. Cody Slayden scored Ririe’s touchdown on a 15-yard pass from Nelson, finishing the night with three recep- tions for 77 yards. Zane Zeller rushed for 30 yards on six carries and had two recep- tions for eight yards. Ririe (0-2) plays Friday at home against South Fremont. BUTTE COUNTY 55, MACKAY 6: At Mackay, six Pirates scored in Butte County’s nonconference rout of Mackay. Butte County coach Sam Thorngren said the game was called by the referees after the Pirates’ final touchdown in the third quarter by way of the former mercy rule. The Idaho High School Activities Association changed the 1A mercy rule to a running clock rule that goes into effect this season, and Thorngren said he and Mackay head coach Jack McKelvey both explained that to the officials before the game. Thorngren said the Pirates shut down Mackay’s passing game. “Our D-line brought a lot of heat,” Thorngren said. “Everybody played their assignments well.” Pirates quarterback Jon Isham completed both attempted passes for 90 yards, one touchdown and also rushed for 55 yards and a touchdown. Jeremie Hjelm led Butte County in rushing with 170 yards on three car- ries for two touchdowns and caught a 30-yard pass. “He’s a speedster,” Thorngren said. “He read his blocks and made some cuts down field.” Butte County (2-0) has a bye next week while Mackay (0-2) hosts Camas County on Friday. DIETRICH 60, WATER- SPRINGS 28: At Ammon, Dietrich broke open a close game with 32 points in the second half to take a non- conference win. Dietrich led 28-20 at half- time. “They threw a couple of deep balls, but most of them were little short passes,” Watersprings coach John Yadon said. “You start getting tired when you start chasing guys. It just snowballs.” Yadon said senior running back/strong safety Daniel Buell was injured early and left the game. A player was making a tackle and caught Buell in the knee. Mark Mathison had 43 yards on 14 carries, caught one pass for 13 yards and completed 10 of 22 passes for 306 yards, three touch- downs and two intercep- tions. Nathaniel Marlin led the Warriors in receiving, catching three for 152 yards and two TDs. Yadon also commended freshmen Uriah Yadon (35 yards on six carries, two catches for 37 yards) and Kyson Poletti (39 yards on eight carries, one catch for 46 yards). Watersprings (0-2) plays Friday at home against Lighthouse Christian. RAFT RIVER 70, CHALLIS 8: At Malta, Max Boden ran for 214 yards and five touchdowns and Raft River opened the season with a dominating win. Boden gave Raft River an 8-0 lead with a 60-yard run and the two-point conversion. Challis tied it on an 11-yard pass from Brandon Hamilton to R.J. Cotant and a two- point run from Hamilton, but Raft River scored the next 62 points. Challis (1-1) is off next week. B y MARK HIGH prsports@postregister.com BLACKFOOT — Non- conference foes collided Friday at Blackfoot High School as the Broncos welcomed the Skyline Grizzlies (0- 2) to town in what proved to be a thrilling contest. In the end it was the Broncos (2 -0) that prevailed as they umped to an early lead and then held off a furious comeback attempt with a 24 -21 victory. “It’s tough. I knew it was going to be tough and I thought that they did a good job against us defensively,” Blackfoot head coach Stan Buck said. “We were able to hit a couple of big throws, but we can be better.” One of those big throws was the game’s first play from scrim- mage as Broncos quarterback Pacen Hayes connected with Taylor Pearson on a pass to the flat that turned into an 80 -yard touchdown strike, putting the Broncos up 7 -0 just 13 seconds into the game. Hayes finished with 232 yards passing on 11 completions. Skyline answered that score with a game-tying touchdown pass later in the opening frame as David Ames took a handoff and then jump passed a perfectly placed ball into the waiting hands of Garrett Whitehead for a 5- yard strike. The two teams then settled in on defense, and with 53 seconds remaining in the half, Blackfoot’s Josiah Hoskins was able to step in front of a Benton Mitchell pass for a 47 -yard pick six and a 14 -7 Broncos lead heading into half- time. Blackfoot extended that lead to 17 -7 midway through the third quarter as Matt Peterson con- nected on a 38 -yard field goal. Three minutes later, Mitchell connected on the first of two touchdown strikes to Brannon Whyte, and after the Jorge Carmona point after kick, the score stood at 17-14. Mitchell finished with 145 yards passing as the senior con- nected on 16 pass attempts. With the lead, Blackfoot then turned to the ground game. Led by senior Damon Bodkin, the Broncos began pounding away at the Grizzly defense. Bodkin fin- ished with 77 yards rushing, 55 of those coming down the stretch in the second half. “That’s going to be a good one -two punch down the road and I think that our offensive line started feeling it too,” Buc said. “We knew that Bodkin is a physical kid. He’s worked hard in rehab to get back and teams will have to respect both aspects of our offense. They can double us on the outside or play seven in the box. It’s a good thing to have.” After a Hayes 10 -yard touch- down run pushed the lead bac to 10, Skyline answered with another Mitchell to Whyte score. But a late interception by Black- foot safety Chase Causey sealed the victory.
