OF WORDS AND WHISTLES Whilst watching the U16B game with the headmaster of De Kuilen on Saturday, I was accosted by an irate parent spectator from the opposition school. She was angry because a member of our coaching staff had told her to ‘shut up’. It is, of course, a matter of pride for me that people associated with our school give off the right impression and I indicated to her that I would gladly walk with her to the coach and ask him to apologise. It so happened however that I had been standing near to this lady for a portion of the game and had heard how she and her party were constantly haranguing the referee about his decisions. I was therefore able to add a condition - I would take her to the staff member for an apology, if she would agree to come with me to apologise to the referee. Her response was interesting and I think may go some way to explain the behaviour of many so-called supporters of schoolboy sports. She insisted that she had, “just been supporting our boys.” Her reply made it clear that shouting at the umpire has become so endemic that it is now seen as a form of support. If a decision is marginal or does not go the way of my team, I am at liberty to verbalise my unhappiness in as crass a form as possible because this indicates to those around me my passion for my son and his team.
