Poetry began in the ancient Mesopotamian civilization in 2000 BC. It didn't start out in prose like we think of today, but rather in epic stories. The first epic story was "The Epic of Gilgamesh". It was told through oral tradition then written on tablets. You can see how far the epic has come in years since. It is astounding the leaps and bounds poetry has taken in modern times.
