2The Singlish Times Image courtesy of: cavinteo.blogspot.com Our Articles What Is Singlish? Singlish is like the Singaporean food, Rojak, which is a mix of Chi- nese, Malay, and Indian food. Simi- larly, Singlish is a mix of the lan- guages, Chinese, Malay, Indian and English. It is an inappropriate form of speaking, and it is very common nowadays in Singapore. Goals and Expectations In SEA(Speak English Accurately), we hope to spread the word that Singlish is not a good way o speaking, and we urge everyone in Singapore to quit the habit o speaking it. Of course, by saying this, we are not saying that people should cut down on Singlish en- tirely. Singlish is the pride of us Singaporeans, and we hope that people are proud of it. However, the important thing is to be able to switch between Standard English and Singlish correctly. For example, when talking with friends, you might choose to use Singlish to communicate, as it is an informal conversation. However, during job interviews, you might want to use Standard English to speak. There are 2 reasons why that is so. The first on is because this will enable people to under- stand yourself better. The second is that people would have a better impression of you if you use Stan- dard English to commune. So here they are, the articles writ- ten by us. They will teach you what is right, and what is wrong, and also bring out the point that Singlish is ruining Singapore. We hope that you are able to see the disadvantage in speaking Singlish and why you should not continue using it. We do urge that you cut down the on the usage of Singlish, and... Happy reading! rticle 1: Introduction to Singlish Singlish is a mix of a di f erent lan- guages used in Singapore and is most commonly referred to by for- eigners as “Singapore’s English”. It is also like “rojak”, a mixture of the di f erent kinds of food from the four di f erent races in Singapore. While both Singlish and rojak em- phasizes the need for Singapore- ans to maintain good racial harmo- ny with people of another culture, Singlish is not recommended for use by Singaporeans as it gives for- eigners a bad impression. Examples of Singlish words are “lah” and “mah”. Walk around any street in Singapore and one can definitely hear these two Singlish words in use. In one particular case, I heard some people scolding each other. This might not be wrong, since we hear people scold- ing o en, except for the fact that every one sentence that these peo- ple use, they must end using the word “lah” or “mah”. This goes on to show that Singaporeans are re- ally in need of help to kick o f the habit of using Singlish. I do really hope that Singaporean can quit using Singlish and use standard English instead. Despite several “rescue e f orts” by the gov- ernment, Singaporeans still do not use Standard English. Therefore, I feel it is of utmost importance to pass on this message to my fellow Singaporeans: Stop the use o Singlish, and start using Standard English to speak.
