16 | HABITAT INDIVIDUEL | LAURéAt TROPHéE ARCHIZINC N°4 | VM Zinc fo Attu Ribier, Royal, Frankenthal and Lopold III: these are all names of Belgian grape varieties grown in glasshouses in and around Hoeilaart. The lavish winegrowers’ villas around the vil- lage are the last remaining traces of this once thriving activity that reached its peak in 1961, before the customs agreements of 1962 and the oil crises which were the death blow. During the boom years, no less than 11 mil- lion tons of grapes were produced in 35,000 glasshouses, which made Hoeilaart look like a glass village. A handful of glasshouses are the only remaining evidence of this winegrowing Eldorado, the majority having been destroyed to make room for countryside housing in an area close to Brussels. With their “Den Travoo” project, architects BOGDAN & VAN BROECK wanted to recon- nect with this vanished past. This 41-unit pro- gramme including 12 social housing units in the centre of Hoeilaart was built according to a Public-Private Partnerships procedure. The symbol of the glasshouse, transcribed by zinc on the roofs and facades, is combined here with the archetype of the greenhouse. The joints of the zinc cladding installed on the entire envelope replicate the architecture of glasshouses, while the double-sloped saw- tooth roofs unite the stacked dwellings in one volume, unlike juxtaposed rowhouses. The main reference remains the glasshouses, aligning both the roof's highest and lowest points as well as the openings with the verti- cal zinc lanes, up to and including the colour of the bilacquered zinc, which is a reminder of the summer periods when the glass panels would be whitened to limit overheating.
