It is the 90th minute and the championship game is tied 0-0. I pass the ball to a wide open Chris in the penalty box when, suddenly, the unthinkable happens. Ezra Chapels, the star center back for Argentina, slides cleats up into Chris, taking him out. I hear a stomach-wrenching crack. The referee blows his whistle and runs to give Ezra a straight red. The ref calls on our medical trainer and Chris is immediately taken off the field in a stretcher. Coach Joe yells at me to take the penalty kick. With great nervousness, I walk up to take the penalty kick. A million things are running through my head: will Chris be ok? did he break a bone? Concentrate, I told myself. I position myself to take the kick and then I run up to shoot the ball. I shoot it right at the keeper. After the keeper saved the ball, he threw it to Lionel Wood, who then dribbled down the field and scored the winning goal for Argentina. Tweet! Tweet! The referee blew his whistle.I fell to my knees when Lionel scored. Game over. I felt like it was all my fault. How could I have missed? This was all I had dreamed about. ~~~ At the hospital back in New York, I sat down next to Chris. “Howdy, how’s it going,” I uttered. “Ok, I guess. They said I broke my tibia,” Chris replied. “They also told me they are testing my blood to see anything else is wrong with me.” “You’ll be fine,” I encouraged Chris. “How’d the game go?” Chris asked “We lost,” I told him. “Oh well, we’ll beat them next time,” Chris answered with optimism. “Yeah, in four years,” I mumbled under my breath. When Doctor Wright walked in the room, he announced some very unwanted news. ~~~ “Get in here Tony!” Doctor Wright shouts. I am sitting in the waiting room, waiting for the diagnosis on Chris.
