First was the infamous chowder. Fortunately, there was no ring of grease on the top of it or I would have been out the door and never come back. The chowder was served in a bowl with an oval plate on the bottom, both of which seemed to be made out of some kind of hard plastic as opposed to china plates. Nevertheless, the soup was nice and hot, with steam wafting from the top of the bowl carrying the amazing scent of clam chowder up with it. The presentation was nice as well: the soup had chopped parsley in the center of the soup, giving the dish some color. There was a nice amount of soup, filling even on its own. It was thick and creamy with little round potatoes cooked to perfection; soft just like the inside of a baked potato. To my disappointment, there was very little clam in the soup. From what I had in my bowl, I found that the clam was extremely chewy a feeling I imagine is similar to chewing through rubber and were about the same size as the potatoes. There was also practically no celery in the soup. I could only find one slice, but thankfully that one slice was still crisp despite being surrounded by piping hot liquid. The soup overall was a tad salty, but was very good nonetheless. I could see why this clam chowder recipe was the pride and joy of Boudin SF. Next I had the chicken pesto sandwich. When I ordered it, I was told that I would have all natural chicken breast, tomatoes, arugula, pesto mayo, and balsamic vinaigrette on sourdough baguette. From the first glance at this sandwich, the bread looked greasy. A shame, but overlooked when I noticed that the sandwich was well executed: split in equal halves with a nice clean cut. The craftsmanship was great; luckily everything was inside and between the slices of sourdough bread. When I went in for the first bite, I struggled to cut through the tough sourdough bread. Its crust was much too thick for me to bite and as a result of my attempt, all of the contents of the sandwich spilled out onto the plate. I found this incredibly frustrating: every time I took a bite, food would spill. Then I would have to wipe my fingers from the greasy exterior of the sandwich, pick up my fork, lift the top of my sandwich up, pick up the food that fell out of the sandwich, place it back onto the bread, close it up, then resume eating. As if it was not hard enough to eat the bread as it was! Not only that, but the “pesto” was completely watered down with mayonnaise so I could not taste any components of the pesto. I am assuming that that mayonnaise was the reason for the oily bread crust. If the cooks just went easy on the mayo, everything would have been better: the food would not have spilled out of the bread and I would not have been utterly disgusted by the amount of oil on my fingers. Luckily, the vegetables in the sandwich were fresh. Crisp red tomatoes and whole green arugula were added to my sandwich, rounding everything out and giving me something to like about the sandwich despite its mediocre taste. The chicken was a success as well. Being the star of the sandwich, I was glad to see that there were large pieces of the well cooked, juicy grilled chicken. Too bad it was slathered in that sad excuse of pesto mayo.
