About Lawrence Lawrence Ferlinghe, born on March 24 1919, New York.In 1953 Lawrence opened up a bookstore which was a place for literary advanced. In 1955 and newly opened publicaon service published a book his.A Coney Island of the Mind soon by one of the most bought books in the me of its publicaon (1958).His father had shortened the family name le Italy, Lawrence changed to the longer name when he was an adult. Lawrence ’ s dad died before he was born and his mum was sent to a mental hospital. Lawrence ’ s aunt had raised predominantly in France, then later moved to Long Island in New York and seled there. Lawrence commenced his wring of poems when he was 12 and during his youth he aended mulple schools for an unknown reason. When he had nished school he went to the University of North Carolina where Chapel Hill is. Where he was awarded a bachelor's degree in journal- ism in 1941. Beat Movement Beat poetry came about around the 1940s in New York City and on the west coast, later San Francisco became the epicentre of the poec movement at the beginning of the1950s. The ending of World War 2 le poets like Allen Ginsberg, Gary Snyder, Lawrence Ferlinghe and Gregory Corso contem- plang polics and culture. These famous poec geniuses would become known as the Beat generaon, a group of poets intrigued in altering con- sciousness and ghng against convenonal wring. The bale against social conformity was important to the work of the Beat movement. Among this group of poec geniuses , drugs were commonly used to achieve higher imaginavely , as was meditaon and religion. Bud- dhism was very important to many of the Beat poets.
