S ince its establishment in 1965 the Butterfield Park District has been preserving land in our community and protecting the natural habitats that exist in our neighborhoods. Fifty years later, the job remains unfinished. The Park District is committed to protecting sensitive land that might otherwise be endangered, acquiring this land, and preserving the natural beauty for our residents and the generations to come. We have adopted a Master Plan designed to preserve and restore natural lands, passive parks, large open space parks, hiking and biking trails, and opportunities for nature and environmental education. On November 4, 2014, the citizens of the Butterfield Park District will be asked to vote on a Referendum authorizing the issuance of general obligation bonds for the Butterfield Park District to acquire and protect the land at the northeast corner of Illinois Route 56 and Illinois Route 53 for nature areas, open space and park and recreation purposes, to improve trails, outdoor park amenities, gardens and passive recreation areas, accessibility, safety, and programming space for children and adults throughout the district and to develop trails, improve and renovate neighborhood and community parks.
