Cardiovascular Health Blood pressure will rise Blood vessels will vasoconstrict (their diameter will decrease). This causes a rise in blood pressure. A rise in blood pressure causes blood to flow faster and more forcefully. To withstand the extra force, the blood vessels need to add an extra layer of muscle to their walls This further increases blood pressure! An increase in blood pressure can also cause your blood vessels to tear. This occurs primarily at bifurcation points; this is where blood vessels split to form smaller branches. Glucose and cholesterol in the blood will stick to injury sites creating plaque build- up. This plaque blocks blood flow. Plaque can be dislodged, but when this happens it travels to smaller vessels and could result in a stroke or heart attack. The stress response will increase the rate and force of your heart beat. The heart will also increase its muscle; this is called left ventricular hypertrophy. The left side of the heart is affected more because it must pump blood to the entire body. The right side of the heart only has to pump the short distance to the lungs. Your heart now has to work harder to pump blood
