Tectonic Plate Theory: Tectonic plates are always shifting the world, constantly rearranging the location of continents, countries and cities. Tectonic plates describe the movements of Earth’ s lithosphere on a global scale . ( Moorland School, 2013). The lithosphere is the hard external covering of Earth which is separated into tectonic plates ( Richard Stockton, 1999). On Earth, there are eight main plates and many minor plates. (Refer to figure 1) Earth's surface does not consist of one giant piece, it actually consists of a chain of large plates. Heat comes from deep down in the Earth where radioactive decay occurs and this helps to create convection currents ( Will Storr, 2014). Convection currents occur beneath the plates and these currents assist in the movement of plates in different directions. (Refer to Figure 2) The plates float on semi-molten rock and are consistently moving and they travel at a rate of few centimetres each year. The ocean floors are also constantly moving as they spread out from the middle and sink at the boundaries. ( Education Portal, 2003-2014) Three pieces of evidence that provide support for the existence of continental drift are… There were separated pieces of a fossil (plant or animal) on different countries. (Refer to figure 4) The land of the Earth fits together, like a jigsaw puzzle. (Refer to figure 5) The same geologic features on coastlines of different countries. In 1912 a German Scientist, Alfred Wegener, (Refer to figure 3) suggested that all the countries/continents were once stuck together as one landmass- called Pangaea ( Richard Stockton, 1999). He alleged that Pangaea was together and unharmed until about 200 million years ago, when countries started to drift apart. Figure 1: Outline of Tectonic lates Wiki edia 2014 .
