Isabel Bremner Australia movie analysis assignment "Is the movie Australia representative of Australia (the country) or is it a Hollywood version of reality?" Introduction The film Australia , by Baz Luhrmann is set in the Northern Territory of Australia during WWII. It tells the story of a failing Cattle station which is saved by a drover, a posh English woman and a group of Indigenous Australians. Australia conveys many aspects of Australia, providing information on the climate and on Indigenous Australians. The film provides an accurate representation of the climate of the Northern Areas of Australia, however the climate does of the Northern Territory does not correspond with that of the whole of Australia’s climate . It provides a well rounded and accurate representation of the Aboriginal people of Australia at the time. The film is not representative of Australia in all aspects. Climate Darwin is an example of a tropical climate. The climate of Darwin is represented accurately in Australia. However the climate of Darwin does not correspond with the climate of many parts of Australia, such as Canberra. Being close to the equator means Darwin has a tropical climate. The seasons are separated into the dry season and the wet season. The southern parts of Australia experience four distinctly different seasons, summer, autumn, winter and spring. From November to the end of March, the Northern territory experiences a wet season. As portrayed in the film, this season allows for the growth of many diverse native fauna and the filling of empty creeks. During the wet season, Darwin experiences lightning storms and cyclones. As illustrated in source A, at its peak, Darwin experiences over 400 mm of rain in a month. However these conditions are not consistent throughout Australia. As portrayed in source B, at its peak Canberra experiences less than 60 mm of rain and at its lowest, just under 40 mm, which is approximately consistent throughout the year with the minimum average rainfall per month. From April to October the Northern Territory experiences its dry season. During the dry season, the weather is still very hot, with the exception of nights where temperatures can reach below 10 ○ Celsius. As conveyed in source A, the months of June and July experience approx. one day of rain per month. Due to the lack of rain, land becomes dry and cracked and dust storms or ‘Willy willys’ as they are referred to in Australia become problematic. Another result of little rain and dry land is the depletion of water sources and fauna. For this this reason there are very few plant species that survive year round. As portrayed in the film, to ensure the Source A Source B
