January 2015 Dear Parents, The purpose of this booklet is to give you all of the information about the exciting range of courses your child could study in Years 10 and 11 at BHS. We hope that you will find this booklet interesting as well as a useful reference document throughout the two years. It will show you, at a glance, the areas of study and the key skills to be developed and how the courses are structured for each subject on offer. Our goal in Years 10 and 11 is to keep students’ op tions open as much as possible so that they do not prematurely restrict their subject choices as they advance through their Secondary education. Very few students know what career pathway they wish to pursue at this stage of their life, and those who do, often change their minds. It is important to note that when your daughters are selecting their Year 10 and 11 GCSE/IGCSE courses they keep in mind the six subject areas of the IB Diploma. It is at the end of the two year IB programme that students graduate from BHS and are well-equipped to enter university or college. At BHS, all of our students decide to pursue some form of further education at university or college. We are all aware that life and indeed learning does not stop once one’s university or college education is finished. During his talk at the TED conference, Sir Ken Robinson spoke about educating students for an uncertain future: “It is education that is supposed to take us into this future that we can’t grasp. Nobody has a clue about what the world will be like in 10 years time; and yet, we are meant to educate our students for it.” Although it is true that we cannot teach students what the world will be like in ten years time, at BHS, we firmly believe that we can teach our students to be prepared for it and to have the skills and attributes to adapt to the challenges that this uncertain future may hold. The Year 10 and 11 courses offered at BHS are taught and designed to best prepare your daughter for her future. We hope that you and your daughter will find that our Year 10 and 11 courses will meet her needs and ambitions. If you require any further information, please do not hesitate to contact the Subject Department Heads or Miss Catherine Hollingsworth. Yours faithfully, Linda Parker Head of School
