Manners Are Sticky Having good table manners is more than being someone others want to eat near; it has actually been shown to rewire and strengthen networks in the brain. Who knew reinforcing table manners in your program promotes brain power? 12 Age group: Primary and Intermediate Time needed: 15 minutes Focus: Manners, Etiquette Materials required: Table Manners Cards, sticky hands Group sizes: Four teams Preparation: Become familiar with instructions for playing the game, included below. Spread out one set of the cards on a flat surface such as the floor or a table. Smart brains know... Pre-discussion: Do you prefer to eat alone or with other people? Why? Why do you think people enjoy spending time together eating meals? Have you ever had a meal with someone who had horrible table manners? If so, what were some of the bad manners you noticed? Did eating with the impolite person make your meal enjoyable? Why or why not? Activity: 1. Divide students into four teams. 2. Give each team a sticky hand. 3. Tell students the objective of the game is to use the sticky hands to capture as many manners cards as possible. 4. Begin with the first player on each team. The player calls out the manners card he is trying to capture and whether it is polite or rude. He then flings the sticky hand in an attempt to stick the hand to the card and successfully pull the card back to the group. If he captures the card, the team holds on to the card until the end of the game. If he sticks to the wrong card, then the card is put back into play. 5. Play continues with the next group. 6. The team with the most cards at the end of the game is the declared the winner. Post Discussion: It is sometimes hard to remember to use all your good table manners. Which table manners do you have a hard time remembering? What are some things you can do to help yourself remember the manners you tend to forget? Imagine sharing a meal with people who had no table manners. What would it be like? Do you think it would be an enjoyable experience? Why or why not? © MindWorks Resources 2014
