Introduction Set in 1939, just before the beginning of World War II, the film Australia directed by Baz Luhrmann explores the story of an English woman, Lady Sarah Ashley. Inheriting the cattle ranch Faraway Downs from her late husband, Lady Ashley reluctantly makes a pact with a drover to protect her new property from a takeover plot, to drive over 1500 cattle through the Kimberley Region to Darwin. Throughout the film Luhrmann has managed to highlight the mistreatment of Indigenous people at the time, incorporating many aspects of Aboriginal life during the 1930’s , such as the stolen Generation, discrimination and The Dreaming, however the film does not represent the vast range of climates found throughout Australia. Australia and the Kimberly Region Australia is the world’s only island continent, located between the Indian Ocean and west of the Pacific Ocean. Australia is found between the latitudes and longitudes of 10 0 S and 44 0 S and 113 0 E and 154 0 E, with the tropic of Capricorn passing through the continent. The film is based around the Kimberly Region, pictured in Figure 1, which is found in the northern end of Western Australia. Covering an area of almost 432 000 square kilometres, the Kimberley Region stretches from the Great Sandy Desert in the south, to the Kimberly Plateau and the Timor Sea in the north. Climate _ _ Seasons In the film a tropical monsoonal climate is shown, where there are two very distinctive seasons, the wet season, usually between April and October, and the dry season, from November until the end of March. Although this is representative of the Kimberley Region, there are many different climatic zones found throughout Australia which are not all represented. Figure 2.1 shows the many different climatic zones within Australia, with areas being grouped as a Tropical, Equatorial, Subtropical, Desert, Grassland or Temperate climate before it is further classified into different sub-groups. These different climatic zones also receive different amounts of rainfall throughout the year, and at different times. In the film, there is a huge downpour of rain which marks the beginning of the wet season, which can happen in a monsoonal climate, however the weather throughout all of Australia is not as extreme.
