Prerequisite Skill(s) Needed: Basic knowledge of the internet and being able to use search engines to look up information on the internet. How will you teach students the objectives identified above. (List step-by-step description of the lesson. ) Introduction: (how students will be introduced to the goals and what is expected of them.) The introduction will consist of giving the students a few facts about the number of websites created each year (21.4 million last year alone) 1 billion webs ites (and it’s constantly increasing) currently exist. Then a discussing previous internet searches done by students, how they found information they were looking for, what kind of frustrations they faced and which search engines they use most frequently. Each student will be expected to participate with at least one example or input of some kind. Main activity: (how the teacher will facilitate the learning experience.) List and discuss the “5 Steps to more accurate and efficient Google search” 1. Keywords- keyword searching is generally the first step to a search; a common mistake is using less than five keywords. Because there are so many websites, the search becomes diluted if you only input a few words. 2. Using Truncation- if you’re not sure what keywords to use then using * symbol then you’ll get results for the word combination you’ve keyed in, with * as variant. This is good for someone who is looking for ideas but isn’t sure which keywords to use. 3. Exact Phrases- quotation marks “ “ should be used if y ou want the search engine to only look for sites with exact phrasing. 4. The “OR” and “ - “ The OR operator already exists in Google. When you type in any keywords, websites that contain any of the keywords will be displayed in the results. The difference with the OR operator is that you can define keywords or phrases with quotation marks rather than have the search engine search for all the words you typed in. 5. Search Within a site- As long as the site is indexed by Google, you can search within the site for more specific results. You can do this by putting the domain name into the Google search query. A specific topic should be given for students to search (my topic would relate to safety in amusement parks and I would have students look for a specific accident that took place in the US between 2012 to 2014. We would then compare what information students were able to locate. Conclusion: (how the teacher will bring closure for students and provide feedback.) After covering these specific items listed above I would also discuss that there are additional tips out there and each user may decide what works best for what they are trying to accomplish. These are 5 of the many tips. Students can also give feedback into what they use and what they like the best, thus providing additional learning for all involved.
