PAGE 2B | GRUNION GAZETTE | June 26, 2014 During his senior season, Smith had nine touchdowns de- spite missing a game with injury and despite sitting during the sec- ond half of all six Moore League contests. He scored by throwing, receiving, rushing and returning kicks, and also was one of the top defensive players in Southern California, registering 71 tackles while leading Poly to a CIF semi- nal berth. But it was always more than numbers that dened Smith’s importance to Poly, and to Long Beach’s sports scene. It was the huge cheering section that followed him wherever he went, sometimes with more than 100 family members and friends wearing “Team JuJu” shirts in the stands. It was the way he attracted attention, and handled that attention with class and humility. The highest-recruited player from Long Beach since DeSean Jackson, Smith had the spotlight on him wherever he went. He was interviewed on television a dozen times, including a special Signing Day ESPN segment when he an- nounced he was staying local and going to USC. ESPN wanted him to drive to LA to lm the segment at ESPN Zone, but Smith politely declined, telling the producers that he wanted to make his an- nouncement at school, with his teammates, coaches and teachers. ESPN, of course, sent a camera crew to Long Beach. That day will be one of many enduring images for Smith. There are several from his junior season, when he led Poly to a CIF championship, and several more from the eld during his senior campaign, with big hits and big runs that changed games. But there were also quiet moments — during halftime of the game he sat out due to injury, when he played catch with younger siblings of his teammates on the track at Vets, or when his family lifted him on their shoulders after a big win. For excellence on the eld as well as grace and class in han- dling a national spotlight, John “JuJu” Smith is one of our two 2013-2014 Gazettes Newspapers All-City Athletes of the Year. Ariana Washington, Track Long Beach Poly has produced some special standout student- athletes, and this year Ariana Washington earned her place right up there with the best, in terms of high school accomplish- ments. She defended her state titles in the 100- and 200-meter sprints, with new personal bests and nation-leading marks in both, also setting a school record in the 100. Along with a 4x100 relay gold, that gives her eight state titles in her career, a feat equaled in history only by Marion Jones and Allyson Felix. It also makes her the most dec- orated Long Beach high school track and eld athlete ever.
