If you would like to apply go to the announcements page at www.gwatfldc.org. Dear GWATFL Members, This has been a truly exciting year to be your GWATFL President! As your President, I have been on conference calls with foreign language leaders around the nation discussing current initiatives and learning ways that we can advocate for our profession. I see great strides being made in the Washington, DC area with regard to foreign language education. As the economy appears to be recovering, our programs seem to be thriving. While top level leaders have played a role in this, it is you, the classroom teachers and other leaders, who have made the greatest impact. I have seen you working through the “Foreign Language Depression” where there was little to no money for new materials, class sizes got bigger, and the amount of preps and responsibilities grew larger. While I am sure your parents, students, and administrators have acknowledged their appreciation for your hard work, please know that I, along with the GWATFL Board, would also like to commend you on a job well done. In my work with my school system and the GWATFL organization, I enjoy learning new practices and putting them to use. Attending the NECTFL Conference in Boston was an excellent learning experience and it was invigorating to be able to network with foreign language education leaders from all over our region. As our world becomes more technologically advanced, it is important to learn how to use more and more technology in our classroom. At the conference, I even learned how to incorporate basic technology (Microsoft Word) in new ways in my instruction. I strongly encourage all of our members to attend the NECTFL Conference in 2015! Once again, our GWATFL Teacher of the Year, Sean Boettinger, was selected as a NECTFL Finalist. He went on to compete at the NECTFL Conference and represented our organization very well. The GWATFL Teacher of the Year is an annual competition that showcases the best teachers in our area. The winner received a travel stipend to attend the NECTFL Conference and if chosen as a NECTFL finalist, can possibly go on to be the ACTFL Teacher of the Year. You can find more information about the competition on our website. Please consider nominating yourself for the award, we know you are all doing great things. In closing, I would like to reiterate that GWATFL is not an organization based on Board Members, but it is made up of its membership. All of our members help make GWATFL a great organization. Your contributions to our organization, to your schools, and your students are invaluable. Thank you for your hard work, dedication, and for being a valued member of our organization. I am honored to be your GWATFL President. By Jane M. Ness, Prince George’s County Public Schools. GWATFL Board Members A Letter from the President
