A Letter from the Co-Presidents Dear Friends: Habitat for Humanity of Coastal Fairfield County (Habitat CFC) experienced a year of transformations and transitions and renewed and inspired partnerships in 2011. At the same time, the core of our work remained the same, transforming families and neighborhoods so that they are positioned for success. This, our 26 th year, marked the completion of our 160 th home. We’re proud that we are currently preparing 22 families for the transition to home ownership through the Habitat program. In 2011, we completed the transformation of our operating practices to a model in which all funds for home construction were raised in advance. This was made possible by a number of other successes. The Annual Hearts & Hammers Gala, always a festive event, became a significant source of revenue last year, raising 40% more than the year prior. Special guests included Governor Malloy, Senator Blumenthal and Congressman Himes, all avid Habitat CFC supporters. The Habitat CFC ReStore also progressed from being a helpful contributor to our bottom line to a significant funder of nearly two of our construction projects in 2011. The “green by - product” of this success is that much of what the ReStore sold would otherwise have ended up in landfills. Success in two major Connecticut tax credit programs meant that we were able to completely pay down our short term debt at year end. Our Youth United and Women Build initiatives evolved into mature programs with new offerings. Youth United launched an effort that provides our young people with enhanced advocacy and fundraising skills that help them fund their work with Habitat and which will also serve them in their academic and future work lives. We know of no other program that builds skill in youth while they, in turn, make such a positive impact on our shared community by funding and building an affordable home. Scores of influential Fairfield County women partnered with our Women Build program this year. GE Capital’s Women’s Network hosted a Day of Networking and Building for their counterparts at J.P. Morgan Chase and RBS. Mary Himes and Cynthia Blumenthal hosted a First Ladies Build which also provided an educational session about the plight of low-wage single mothers and their children. Partnerships with all segments of our community drive the success of our work. We continued to receive support from family and private foundations. Our faith partners renewed their support as individual congregations or joined forces in groups like the Community Bridgebuilders Coalition, which played a significant role in the transformation of the blighted lot on West Main Street in Stamford, and the Sound Coalition, which committed to the home on Pembroke Street in Bridgeport. Our corporate partners built teamwork among their employees while they built affordable homes with us. Purdue Pharma became a new corporate build partner and donor while GE continued as our largest corporate supporter, having completed its 22 nd Habitat home. We’re grateful for an ever -growing pool of individual donors many of whom also volunteered on a build site. There they learned about Fairfield County’s critical affordable housing issue and were able to immediately participate in a solution. We know of no other organization that pairs advocacy and action so closely. As we increase our effectiveness and reach more and more donors and volunteers with our mission and message, we assist all of the organizations and individuals who work toward the transformation of Fairfield County’s affordable housing crisis. Thank you for your support. We look forward to your continued partnership. Sincerely, BruceBerzinKeithCook Co-PresidentandCFOCo-PresidentandDirectorofConstruction 1
