From the Rabbi As we enter the nal stretch o 5774, Har Shalom is a bevy o activity as we prepare or the High Holy Days. As we enter 5775 and a ew months later, 2015, we will mark a wonderul milestone in the lie o our congregation: Our 50th Anniversary! There will be numerous events and activities throughout this year celebrating our history and propelling us toward an auspicious uture. One particular endeavor coinciding with our 50th Anniversary is the launching o a Capital Campaign, the primary purpose o which is to renovate parts o our building that are desperately in need o attention. In the course o this year, our goal is to raise $4 million (and hopeully an additional $1 million or upkeep and maintenance) in order to renovate the Social Hall, and transorm it into a beautiul, exquisite ballroom or the simhas , special occasions, and major gatherings in our congregation. Rather than our members having to look elsewhere or a venue or their celebrations, we want Har Shalom to oer a space that enables lie’s most precious moments to take place right here. The Gordon Sanctuary, a space lled with precious memories as our congregation’s rst sanctuary, years later shows its age and deterioration. Our vision or this space is to be reurbished as both a more intimate worship space, and a multi-purpose space that our ECEC kids can utilize, as well as an appropriate room or classes, lectures, or more moderately sized events. Another component o this plan involves the entryway corridor. I you pay attention as you enter the building, you will notice that there is hardly anywhere to sit or congregate with others in our public spaces. We lack warm, communal spaces where people can sit, meet, talk, enjoy a cup o coee, and even charge their electronic devices! The renovation calls or widening the entryway Dearest Friends... to establish a “Living Room” space, with comortable urniture, and various amenities to create an inviting place or people to spend time together in the building. We will also be creating some smaller meeting rooms, and a board room, both o which we are desperately in need o as programs, classes, and activities percolate every day and night o the week at Har Shalom. We also hope to beautiy some o our marvelous outdoor spaces and patios as well. I believe this campaign is critical to my broader vision or a more welcoming, user-riendly, community-building congregation. I you consider the Torah’s emphasis on the creation o sacred space, the emphasis on the physical plant to evoke more religiously signicant experiences should make sense. A place that is holy and special to the amilies o our congregation should refect that value in how we care or our building and utilize it to attract more amilies to Jewish lie and learning at Har Shalom. You will hear more about this project over the High Holy Days, and your participation in this campaign will be necessary or its success. We have already begun raising unds or this project, and I hope I can count on every member o the synagogue to help in whatever way possible, so that our synagogue is, God-willing, well poised to thrive or our next 50 years and beyond! Warm wishes rom my amily to yours or a happy, healthy New Year! L’shana Tova, Rabbi Raskin Rabbi Adam J. Raskin “ If you consider the Torah’s emphasis on the creation of sacred space, the emphasis on the physical plant in order to evoke more religiously signifcant experiences should make sense.
