To others, there may be no reason to believe that the Hockley Valley is a reasonable place for a winery. And they may be right. But Mario has proven the nay-sayers wrong before, and this year he has invested in the first major step of a process that he believes will yield results in around two years. Mario was born in Calabria, Italy. He came to Canada when he was 18 years old. Apart from the move across the ocean, his life’s path took him into a career in food. With his wife Nancy, he started a catering business in 1972. Operating to stan- dards for hospitality and flavour that were informed by memories of the Old World, the business thrived. Its reputation for doing things well and right meant being able to count on new and repeat customers. In 1985, Mario and Nancy hap- pened upon a 28-room inn on a parcel of land just outside of Oran- geville, Ontario. To them it rep- resented an opportunity to move their business into a location that felt more like “home.” And again, between the two of them, the Hock- ley Valley Resort grew and thrived, becoming a destination resort for people in the know. But as the years passed, Mario continued to look at the pastures to the south of the Inn. The rolling hills reminded him of Calabria. But the fields of home were a little dif- ferent. They were covered with “Mario is eager to make wine, he’s excited about it and he has a passion for it,” says Jonas. “We’re going to make honest wines that speak to where they come from.” ut as the years passed, Mario continued to look at the pastures to the south of the inn. The rolling hills reminded him of Calabria.
