Winter 2014 I am pleased to present the new, online-only version o the II Journal , the inormative and lively publication rom the International Institute (II) at the University o Michigan. While the look has changed slightly, the goal remains the same: to highlight intellectual and academic work taking place within the II and its centers. Exempliying the II’s tagline—Your Global Crossroads—the journal will continue to eature articles written by aculty and visitors rom around the world, whose interactions at the II have created ruitul, meaningul conversations and collaborations, as well as new avenues o intellectual exploration. Our writers will continue to share their views on a variety o global issues, and we invite you, our readers, to share with us your eedback. In this issue, Martin Murray discusses transnational urbanism in the global world. Amal Fadlalla presents a dierent view o George Clooney’s humanitarian eorts in the Sudan, while Nancy Rose Hunt discusses the global mental health narrative and the polarity o two leading psychiatrists. Finally, our Director or the Center or World Perormance Studies (CWPS), Kwasi Ampene, explains the series o events that brought amed sarod player Dr. Rajeeb Chakraborty to our campus this all as the CWPS Artist in Residence, and Dr. Chakraborty answers a ew questions. The II enriches our campus, and our community, in so many meaningul ways.
