BIOGRAPHY -Carol Ann Duffy Carol Ann Duffy is a Scottish poet, who was born on the 23 rd December 1955. Best known for her works dwelling in the feminist genre, she has written over 50 different works, ranging from poems to plays. She has won a variety of awards, as well as being recognised as one of the top 100 powerful women in the UK (by BBC Radio). Born in the very poor area of Glasgow, Scotland, she was raised as a Roman Catholic. At the age of six, her family moved to Stafford, England, as her father was required to move for work. She went to Saint Austin’s RC Primary School, and later went to St Joseph’s Convent School, and then Stafford Girls’ High School. Several of her English teachers at these schools noted down her incredible reading ability, and her passion for literature, especially poetry. She wrote her first poem at the age of 11, and as she grew, as did her collection of poems, and her addiction to poetry. By the time she was 15, one of her teachers had sent her poems to a minor publishing company, where some of them were successfully published. In her later teens, she lived with British poet Adrian Henri, where they both spent their time writing poems, and discussing their techniques. Carol Ann Duffy describes this experience as one of the most important times of her life, as it truly developed her style of writing as well as giving her the confidence to go out and publish several of her works. When she went to the University of Liverpool in 1974, she began a philosophy degree, which she received honours for, three years later. In this time, she had written several pieces of work, and had even had 2 of her plays performed at the Liverpool playhouse. For several years, she would write her works, and publish them, earning enough money to live off. However, in 1996, she was appointed as a lecturer of Poetry at Manchester metropolitan University, and was later given the honour of being the creative director of their Writing School. Three years later, she came close to becoming the British Laureate of Poetry, but only managed to claim the title in 2009, after Andrew Motion. Since then, she has spent her days writing poems raising some of the more important inequality issues in society. “I like to use simple words, but in a complicated way”. -Carol Ann Duffy
