Spring 2015 CRIMINAL JUSTICE CAPSTONE SEMINAR 3900 2 Conceptual Focus/Learning Goals: Students will be expected to apply the knowledge acquired from earlier studies in criminal justice administration, theory, and research. This course brings together many different areas involved in the administration of justice. As such, we will go beyond a simple accounting of theory and practice, but look to how and why theory, research and policy intersected, whether it is working, and, perhaps most importantly, how (if at all) it could work both more humanely and more efficiently. Because our criminal justice system is nested within democratic principles, the course will start with a discussion on the limits of criminal justice processing and sanctions, examining the balance between civil liberties and public safety. With this foundation, we’ll move into the realm of theory applications , with appreciation for how theory is translated into policy. We will then explore the emerging field of evidence-based criminal justice programming . These foundations will serve as a launching pad for students to use as they begin to prepare for their presentations. Ultimately, we will look at contemporary issues in criminal justice and analyze their efficacy with respect to the balance of individual rights and community safety, as well as what data tell us about their impact. The study of criminal justice policy is an exploration of both intended and unintended consequences. Students will be asked to take a very critical look at current and proposed policies, and ask whether such policies fit with theory, and work in the real world with respect to their intended goals.
