“I had a daughter who would be your age today,” said Arvin to Bina. “She died in a hospital with a sickness that she contracted because she was kidnapped and was forced to live in bad conditions. I can’t do that to her,” Arvin continued to the woman, Adele, after Bina had gone back in the basement unnoticed by the other Nazis. “How do I make sure any others that are trying to find Jews won’t find her like you did?” Adele asked, not knowing that that wouldn’t be an issue for long. It was already almost the end of the war. It was April fourth, the war would end May eighth. “I will help you build a safe basement in your closet and install carpet so they won’t find it but the carpet will be easy to lift so you can give her food.” “Thank you so much!” “Where are her parents?” asked Arvin. “They were both found out and killed,” Adele said sadly. “You both have my condolences, I am deeply sorry,” Arvin apologized sincerely. Two weeks later Arvin had completed the hideout, it was just dirt but it would have to do for now. “Thank you for all your help,” Bina expressed gratefully, however obviously still nervous. “Don’t worry, Bina, I’ll come back everyday to check on you and your Aunt Adele,” Arvin said. He was growing close to Bina and Adele during the months he was building the hideout and all the time he was acting as a double agent for Adele and Bina. One day Arvin was acting a little strange and quickly left saying he had business to attend to. The next day Arvin came earlier than usual and explained that he had stood up for the Jews and his execution was scheduled for May tenth at noon, the time he usually came to Adele’s house, however they didn’t know his execution would never take place. Arvin stayed with Adele until May eighth when the war ended and Arvin escaped execution by two days.
