Hay 15 subtipos de Hemaglutinina (H 1 -H 15 ) y 9 de Neuraminidasa (N 1 -N 9 ). De este modo, los subtipos de Influenza A que se han identificado responsables de las pandemias son: H 1 N 1 H 2 N 2 El reservorio del virus lo constituyen las aves acuáticas, donde se replican en el tracto respiratorio y gastrointestinal. El impacto que tendrá en la población se deberá al grado de variación antigénica en estas dos glicoproteínas, por mecanismos que se conocen como antigenic drift y antigenic shift . El primero se presenta tanto en influenza A como B y corresponde a la acumulación de mutaciones puntuales en los genes que codifican a hemaglutinina y neuraminidasa. Éste forma parte de la evolución continua del virus.
