Connally2 As a man the main goal since our creation has been to provide for our families. Before there were jobs men were the hunters, and the protectors. We were to make sure that no one in our family and /or tribe was hurt. When war was to be fought we were responsible for fighting that war, and all things physical or violent was left to us to take care of. Now, in a more civilized world, much of that isn't needed now. Most main goals for a family are to simply make sure enough money is in the house, and make sure food is on the table. In my eyes this is all that is really needed as far as black or white masculinity. A man is a man as long as he can provide for his family financially and lead them spiritually. Sadly I'm one of the few people on earth that actually feel this way. We are still socialized into believing that violence, degrading of women, and being in the streets is what makes you masculine or what makes you a man. . Black masculinity cannot be whole heartedly defined, because there are so many different forms of masculinity. Each man is unique and to put a blanket over what black masculinity should be would be to stifle our growth as a culture. The emphasis that is put on what makes a man masculine is part of the African American man’s downfall in some aspects. It is always talked about how few of us there are and how few good young men we have, and that’s mostly because every black male is out here trying to conform, to be hard, and to be a man.
