! ! ! ! ! page ! Today we are here where Lincoln just announced the suspension of Habeas Corpus in the border states. Habeas Corpus is the basic civil right that say a trial is required before you can be sent to jail. Lincoln broke this civil right by throwing people into jail without a trial, including John Merryman. John Merryman was a Maryland Secessionist who was trying to get Maryland to secede. Lincoln did not want this to happen and so he threw Merryman into jail. Chief Justice Taney declared Lincoln’s suspension of Habeas Corpus unconstitutional. While Merryman was waiting for a hearing, Taney had furniture and home-cooked meals brought to his cell. I do not think Lincoln should have done this because it defeats the purpose of Habeas Corpus and everyone deserves a trial. ! ! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Merryman !
