Mesa Police Department’s top cop, Chief Frank Milstead, took the “Ice Water Challenge” to raise money and aware- ness for support for first responders such as police and fire. The ice water challenge has been a part of social media for the past month, with police chiefs and public informa- tion officers from departments including Phoenix, Tempe, Gilbert, and Mesa taking a plunge or dumping cold water on them as part of a fundraising opportunity. The challenge began as a dare: donate $20 if you dump icy water on yourself or jump in a pool of frigid water, or, if you’re not brave enough, donate $100. Sgt. Mike Pooley of Tempe PD filled the bed of a Tempe PD Pickup with a tarp and ice water and took the plunge in full uniform, while Mesa PD Sgt. Tony Landato sat in a trough and had ice and water poured over him. Sgt. Landato called out Chief Milstead to also take the challenge, which he did July 9. In an event sponsored by The Kenny Klaus Team, Chief Milstead went down an inflatable waterslide, ending up fully submerged in 33 degree water. The charity supported by the event was The 100 Club of Arizona, which exists to provide immediate financial assistance to families of pub- lic safety officers and firefighters who are seriously injured or killed in the line of duty, and to provide resources to enhance their safety and welfare. Donations can still be given to The 100 Club of Arizo- na by visiting The 100 Club of Arizona or by contact- ing Barb McReynolds of the Mesa Police Department at 480.254.4023.
