Similarly at our recent Old Girls’ Association Reunion, I talked to women – of many generations – with fulfilling, engaging careers and life experiences. Some were amongst the first to enter their professions, and many are now at the top of them. Others are just setting out, and are doing so with a sense of adventure and purpose. These women have an irrepressible, indefatigable optimism and curiosity. They all spoke about the need for girls to believe. Believe in themselves and believe they can achieve. I believe our girls have this confidence, they know their strengths. I have been re-reading Alice in Wonderland recently. In particular I am drawn to the theme of “curiouser and curiouser”. It could almost be an alternative School motto. Our mission is to breed and feed curiosity, which comes so naturally to children, but actually is a fragile commodity, easily quashed. But it is of the utmost importance. Curiosity leads to exploration, exploration to discovery, and discovery is knowledge. And if we’re talking about Alice in Wonderland, we have to mention Imagination. Imagination in Education lies at the very heart of MSJ. We are here today thanks to the vision of those pioneering women who established our founding Schools. My Speech last year posed the question ‘What Makes a Good School a Great School?’. Over the course of time, as MSJ ‘grows up’, the answer crystallises. One of the hallmarks of a great school is that it places the highest value on creativity and imagination. The girl with imagination has the vision to lead, the vision to change things, the ability to map out and take charge of her future. There is no limit to possibility. No one is without the gift of imagination; it is part of being human. But having the gift is not the same as using and developing it….let us learn from Alice… As our School grows, we use our imagination to map our future. We have green-lighted many exciting projects which will enhance the School’s provision for current and future generations of girls. One beacon project has been the MSJ Bursary Programme. This will increase accessibility to our School for able girls who could not join us without financial assistance. We are passionate about increasing our accessibility and empowering more girls with the gift of an excellent education. The Bursary Programme is in its infancy, but has launched with an exceptional start. Approximately £77,000 has been donated to date. It is with enormous gratitude that I thank the generosity of Old Girls, the Old Girls’ Association, our Leavers’ parents, and parents elsewhere in the School for your donations and legacies. Similarly, our greatest thanks go to those in our community who have donated to The Founders’ Garden to mark the lasting impact of our five founding Schools, again set up because of a passion for girls’ education and fulfilment. With these gifts MSJ’s vision becomes a reality. In School, we have several projects about to commence, ready for unveiling in September. This includes a dedicated Sixth Form Centre for Day Boarders and Boarders. Our Sixth Form Boarding House in Poulton is undergoing refurbishment, and we are adding to our award- winning Maths and Science Centre with a new Biology Lab and two new Maths teaching rooms. Our Health Centre has been relocated to The Benhams, adjacent to the main School building and the Dome has come back to life as part of our impressive Sports provision. Our alumnae grow closer than ever. I referred earlier to the Reunion held just a few weeks ago, coinciding with the opening of The Founders’ Garden at Batsford House. We welcomed a record number of guests to this wonderful event, and I know that people went away feeling all the richer for returning to School. These women are not just proud of their education, they are passionate about it, and where it has taken them. So an amazing number support us by giving their time for Lectures, Career Workshops and Fairs, work experience and internship opportunities. From this Autumn, these professional mentoring opportunities will be significantly increased. We recognise that it is no longer enough just to have impressive examination grades. Our girls need advice, experience, and a support network which will grow with them through their lives. And as testament to our alumnae, and how they give of their time and their experience, we have with us today, as Prizegiving Speaker, Old Girl Hannah Storm. Hannah has found herself in some of the most dangerous places in the world covering war, political instability and natural
