The subject of this book is centered on African culture; this could be controversial in a classroom if a parent feels that this is discriminatory by not representing their culture. (Seeger & Jacobs, 2004) A) When did the people of the town find the boulder? B) What could have been a different way for Grandpa to show that his Magic Wand still worked? C) How did Abiyoyo feel when he first returned to the town? D) Why do you think Abiyoyo felt different when he left the town this time? 2) Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day – 3 rd Grade - One day when everything goes wrong for him, Alexander is consoled by the thought that other people have bad days, too. This book can be interpreted as being controversial if viewed as being very pessimistic and negative view. (Viorst, 1987) A) What was in Alexander’s mouth when he fell asleep? B) Do you feel that if this single event had not occurred, that this would have drastically changed how Alexander’s day ended up? C) What happened afterschool? D) Do to the events of today, do you feel Alexander is more likely or less likely to have a “GREAT” day? 3) Aaron's Awful Allergies- 3 rd Grade - Aaron loves animals but his doctor tells him that he is allergic to them and must give them up. He doesn't feel like doing anything until one day, when his parents give him a surprise that doesn't make him sneeze. The depiction of the shop owner as being not very intelligent could be seen as offensive to some readers. (Harrison, 1996)
