Sugar is everywhere! It is in our cookies, our fruit and even in our milk. How is one expected to escape this guilty pleasure? Recognizing what kind of sugar is in the foods we eat helps us to know whether we are consuming natural sugar or added sugar. For example, fructose is the sugar found in things like fruit, which is a natural sugar. In contrast, sugar that is added by man to make something taste better is simply referred to as added sugar . If you are looking to cut back on the amount of sugar that you are consuming each day, start by minimizing added sugar . These are mainly foods that are categorized as sweets, such as cake, candy bars, and processed food. The American Heart Association recommends that women should consume no more than six teaspoons of sugar a day and men should consume no more than nine teaspoons per day for me. (A helpful hint to know is that 4 grams of sugar equals 1 teaspoon of table sugar). Overall, eliminating sugar from your diet can be a tricky task, so focus on staying away from food and beverages with added sugar and exchange them for foods with a low sugar content or natural sugars.
