Prospect's sophomore football team took on the Fremd Vikings at home Monday afternoon and finished on the short end of a 27-6 final score. The key for the future, starting this week, is for the team to work together for an entire game. Those are the thoughts after the Fremd contest of Anthony Liva. He said,"We will work on finishing, playing through the whole game. We've been doing that during the games, but we just need to do it for 4 quarters." For the second week in a row, the Knights jumped out to a lead and got off to great starts on both sides of the ball. During Fremd's first possession on 3rd and 8 from close to midfield, Liva broke perfectly on a Viking pass, intercepting the ball and returning it for a fast 40 yards to the Fremd 27. After a power run by Stu Isteefanos on 1st down to the 11 and a slick QB keeper by Chase Cummings to the 1, the Knights were set up with 1st and goal. Cummings finished the drive with a dive through the pile on a play called 'Tuff' where the O-line of Sam Lumia, AJ Salvadore, Ryan Roggeman, Vince Shields and Evan Sadlon plowed ahead and paved the way for a Prospect touchdown. On Fremd's next possession the Knights stopped the Vikings in four plays, forcing a punt on 4th down. During that series, Drew Compton made big tackles on two consecutive plays for little and no gain. On the next play, Zach Gleason followed Compton's lead and flattened the Fremd ball carrier at the line of scrimmage. Later after a Viking touchdown, Prospect punted from their own 22. There was a fumble during the attempt to field the punt and Marc Cadero dove on the loose ball to recover for the Knights. The first half ended with Prospect down 14-6. Big plays for Prospect highlighted the second half. In the third quarter, Cadero and Liva made inspirational solo tackles to keep the Knights spirits high. Adding to the elevation, Jeremy Potratz intercepted a Viking pass on 2nd and 3 from the Fremd 27. Potratz's pick set the Knights up with the ball in Fremd territory at the 44. Josh McDermott found a seam in the Viking defense and caught a pass for a 17 yard gain. On 2nd down, Insteefanos ran hard for 5 tough yards. Although the drive ended on a 4th and short play, the team showed that the defense can force turnovers and that offense can move the ball. In the fourth quarter, the Knights continued to battle. McDermott, this time on defense, made two consecutive tackles followed by a swarming gang tackle by the D-line and linebackers. And for the second week in a row, Tom Wharton made a touchdown saving tackle. This time by chasing down a Fremd ball carrier after a 41 yard run, making the tackle at the Prospect 1. Regardless of the score, there is no stopping the Knights determination. The team has a foundation to build on and are positioned for greater success.
