Dear Friends, We sometimes think that November should be recognized as Napa Valley Hospice & Adult Day Services month, given that this month is not only National Alzheimer’s Month, but National Caregiver Month and National Hospice & Palliative Care Month, as well. Granted, there is a day or month designated to almost any and every cause, but we are grateul or the awareness these designations have brought to our services. Clearly, there is a need or more inormation. • In a Gallup survey, when asked to name their greatest ear associated with death, respondents most oten cited “being a burden to amily and riends,” “pain,” and “lack o control.” And 9 out o 10 respondents said they would preer to be cared or at home, rather than in a hospital or nursing home, i diagnosed with a terminal illness. Our Hospice program, which celebrates its 35th anniversary this year, cares or more than 600 patients and their amilies each year. I think one o the reasons we care or more patients and amilies each year is that more people realize that Hospice care is about honoring those important choices and decisions regarding the end o lie. • Adult Day Services, which celebrates its 16th anniversary this year, reached its highest attendance ever this autumn. Not surprising, given that every 67 seconds another mother, ather, sibling or spouse develops Alzheimer’s disease in the US—and that 29% o the US adult population is now serving as the caregiver or a loved one who is chronically ill, disabled, or aged. • Our newest program, Transitions Palliative Care, has grown exponentially in its frst three years as it helps those with advanced, progressive diseases manage their medical care and symptoms, to improve their quality o lie. So we are proud to be a part o National Alzheimer’s, Caregiver, Hospice & Palliative Care Months, and to be able to oer these services to anyone in our community who needs them. We are also proud o those who help us make this possible: our expert and compassionate sta; our donors, sponsors, and volunteers; and other community members who have supported us. There are so many amazing, inspiring stories, and we’ve included a ew to share with you in this newsletter. On the back cover o this newsletter you’ll fnd a list o programs and groups we oer to the community. Take a look, and please share them with anyone who might beneft rom these services, all o which are available ree o charge. Thank you or your ongoing support, and or allowing us to do what we do or all who need it—this month and throughout the whole year. Warm regards, Linda Gibson, President & CEO Your Home Nursing Services Thanks to the ongoing support of Camie Bianchi and Your Home Nursing Services, NVHADS launched our LIGHT Program for Children & Teens (Living In Grief and Healing Together). The LIGHT program is a safe place for children, teens and their parents or guardians to come together for remembering, learning and rebuilding after the death of a close family member. During each session, LIGHT provides children and teens with the age-appropriate tools and support they need through the use of art, play, talk and peer support. Parents and/or guardians attend their own session, to focus on their own healing and learn about children’s grief. In addition, Your Home Nursing Services is also the Premiere Sponsor for NVHADS’s third annual palliative care conference, Honoring Choices: Advance Care Planning Across the Continuum. Since 1989, this local, family-oriented, state-licensed, private-duty home care agency has provided care to patients in the comfort of their own homes in Napa, Sonoma, Solano, and Yolo Counties. They care for patients of all ages, from babies to grandparents, and their services are available when you need them with no limitations on the number of hours.
